A true genius on a surfboard, but as in many cases the genius can come with some self destructive patterns. it is a shame that his superb talent we couldn’t see how he could have progressed over the years.
My heart goes out to his brave mother that cared for him over so many years and had to make some very difficult decisions which i hope that she does not regret,.
I feel that if understanding of drugs and mental illness had have been better back then things could have been so different for him. I understand that back in those days people really didn’t know much about it at all.
I lived and built boards with MP for a winter in HI. He was pretty mellow (shy really) on the outside but incredibly intense inside. I think not being able to let the intensity out except in the water just overheated his insides. Drugs were also in play which didn’t help. Really had a tough time with paranoia which the drugs intensified. Apperently later on the drugs got heavier too. Surf stardom added it’s pressures as well. This is not a unique story really, maybe a bit more extreme than some. That winter Rick Razmussen also lived there and was every bit as intense as MP but was very outgoing. Obviously drugs became his downfall. Anyway RIP MP and Rick. Lotta good surf days with both.
Got this piccy off the Interweb…trying in vain to think of a clever caption!
My regards to MP’s family and friends…He looks at ease here…On my first visit to Kirra I read the book about him and after that…I would look for him on the streets and I would’ve liked to have met him. Never saw him though…MOTE Kirra footage…Magic…
MP about 12 months ago… sorry bout the photobucket link but this file was too big and didnt want to shrink for some reason…
My mate had his baby the same day as MP passed away, I actually found out about 20 mions apart, was mixed emotions but one person ends and another begins, life is weird and seeing the newborn kinda put things into a different light for me that day…
H, bout time you surfaced, most appropriate that you did at this time and what a great piece of memorablia, thanks for sharing it, get that framd mate and treasure it. Bet he an PC are up to no good right now!!
it's nice to see a shot of [the four of ] them together again , at last !
ditto on the P.C. and M.P. comment ...peter crawford is probably taking photos of all the shenanigans , and posting the shots on the ?ethereal equivalent ? of 'Facebook' ?!
( Q: HOW did someone get a photo of M.P. [on land] , WITHOUT his forty year old , never-take-em-off,-EVER 'aviator' sunnies on ? THAT , in itself , would make it a collectors item photo , yes ? ....or ...was it the 'evil' photoshop ?? ) I imagine , if those 'sunnies' were ever auctioned , even though no doubt totally damaged , they would still command $. let's hope his mum or tom keeps them [?wears them?]
I think its the real ‘Big Wednesday’ those 3 back together. It was only abt 2 weeks ago, Larry Bertleman was there along with Andrew McKinnon, who took that pic [I think], I have seen a bunch from that day and heard some funny and physic things that were said. There’s a real good chance that the points are going to be epic on thursday, his funeral, they are looking good, even Kirra, much stranger things have happened.
