The missing forum? How to build a fire

I live on the coast of GA. Our coastline is still pretty much untouched barrier islands. You need a boat to get around to most of them.Just look at the map. Truly an amazing place. Nothing like fresh oysters from the creek cooked on a beach fire.

I use one of these and some paper http://www.harborfreight.com/magnesium-fire-starter-66560.html .  A friend’s Dad used to make firestarting joints.   He’d lay out a double section of newspaper, dump sawdust soaked with recycled motor oil in the middle, and then roll it up and twist the ends.  These burn pretty good by themselves, and long enough to start larger pieces of logs.  As a kid in Michigan, we used to get a good fire going in a 3 ft. pit then lay one end of an entire log over the fire.  As the log burned away, we’d just push another couple feet of it over the pit.  Kept one going for days while camping once.  When I was 9 back in the 50’s, my best birthday gift was a giant box of wooden matches (and a couple of playboys) from another kid.  The ability to start a fire and some hot ladies (well, just pictures at that age) indeed confirmed all of what’s really necessary to survive.
