The new log standard

FWIW Matt Calvani who is** Bing** Copeland’s chosen shaper was the winner of the Boardroom Icons of Foam Shape Off last year.

 A human machine.

Six shapers — Gary Larson, Ricky Carroll, Matt Calvani, Mickey Munoz, Donald Brink, and Tyler Warren — each had the honor of replicating a classic Terry Martin design in the US Blanks shaping bay.

The replica by Matt Calvani, who shapes for Bing Surfboards, got an immediate nod from the panel of expert judges and was deemed a clear winner. Calvani took home the $1,000 prize and his name will be etched on the Mike Marshall Perpetual Trophy."

Hey thanks for the responses!

I’m definitely going to look into Beal and Hanlon. Beal’s facebook has a ton of LJ shots, I wonder where he shapes in nh or if he’s still out there. Am I right to think that I’ll probably be logging more than anything else out in NH?

Wayne Rich looks great too. Thanks for the tip Maka.

Also, a friend of mine recommended Michel Junod and said he could put me in touch with him. I think Michel offers the right balance of shaping experience (tons) with a mind towards the more mordern narrower nosed nose riders.

A good look at his FB would reveal that he’s in MA. North Shore area. You can order one of his boards via Nor’easter Surf Shop in Scituate, MA…which is a short drive from the NH coast.

Where in NH are you going to be?

I’ll find out exactly where I’m working in a few months but I’m hoping to live in rye in an off season beach rental. Anyone have any tips on finding housing up there either? haha

tyler is meticulous, those boards are pretty amazing.

josh oldenberg’s boards shapes are also really nice, probably the best quality i’ve seen for a log that price.

josh hall, chris christensen, andreini, nick palandrani all good too.

You’d be better off a little bit inland and finding something year 'round. The seasonal shuffle is a drag in coastal New England. Towns like Dover, Durham, Newmarket, etc are near the university but still a short drive to the beach. Not sure when you’re heading East, but it’s too late to find an off season rental now and Summer rents for anything beach-side are ridiculous.

I won’t be moving out until September 2014. Depending on the gf’s work situation I’ll probably move to a Boston suburb summer 2015 and start a reverse commute up to work (bummer, but love right?). But yeah with the eventual move it makes me feel less guilty about really hunting down a beach spot and leading the dream life for at least a few months.

I have a 9’6 thomas bexon harrison roach concept. It is an amazing board…Hard to find but if you can grab one its worth it.

I moved from HB to Boston a few years ago and have been surfing all over MA, NH, RI and ME. Been in the lineup with Roger a few times and have discussed boards with him at the Nor Easter shop in Scituate.  He’s a good surfer and was easy to talk surfboards with. I’d suggest working on a design for New England with him. He knows all the spots and conditions. You are right to assume you’ll be surfing a long board more than anything.

Austin in Virginia, Mickey McArthy or Scott Busbey in Outer Banks.

I own and often ride a Jim Phillips 9’9" Van Velzer Pig… Best log ever!

They are expensive… quality is worth every penny… save up some cash… honestly, don’t let your life go by without owning and riding one…

and no leash please : )

Google New York Surfboard Shapers.  There’s plenty, imcluding Jim Goldberg and Bunger.

Check out my good friend Kyle “juicebox” Johnson’s work at Pearson Arrow here in Santa Cruz. Great “classic/modern noserider” log shaper and surfer.
