The Next Surfboard Design Workshop/Roundtable

I have had several requests from some Swayock Members, to do another workshop.     I have found, from experience, that a small group of ten to fifteen people has the best energy/ dynamic for information exchange.     Some time in late March would be most likely.    Location?     San Diego area would be ideal, for me.    Your thoughts?

May I add that it would be great for attendees to bring some of there work

I would like to attend as I missed a few of these events

can we make this more hands-on?

like…make a template, template a blank, shape blank

I’d like to see a pro working with a planer…that time watching the gent from the FCS factory working the planer was very valuable.

Depends on the venue.

look, if someone will offer their yard/garage, I will commit to bringing a keg.

then I will get bill drunk, present him with a blank that I just happen to have in my truck and convince him to shape a board that I will then shanghai.

Did you say a KEG?  Hmm… I happen to have an opening at my place.  We can BBQ too.

If you want planer lessons (and can't get BT drunk enough), you should entice Jim Phillips into coming by. If you're gonna learn, learn from the best! Prepare to have your minds blown, however. Artistry is an amazing thing to watch.

If there is a keg, count me in!

But seriously, I’ll come too!

If we are going to template or shape, I have all kinds of tools- two planers, portable bandsaw, sander polishers, etc. And I get alot of masonite from work? I have two portable plastic boxes filled with shaping tools. Let me know. R

Bill, Im always intersted in a meeting of the minds. Count me in if it happens. Any particular topic or ideas you have in mind--- Shaping, glassing, fins, art work and or tools, etc? Im in either way. Let me know.  I was at the last group meeting at the FCS warehouse with Bryant. That group meeting had a variety of things that seemed to include everyone.  R

Any and all topics are fair game.    Questions from attendees, will drive the direction of the discussion.

I would very much like to attend. I've only shaped a few boards, but I can't stop!!

Bill,

The info that you have shared both in person and through this forum has been invaluable. I would love to be in attendance and would gladly bring any supplies needed from work (masonite, wood, hand tools, etc). Just let me know.

Glad to here that you are feeling better!

Lou "cuz"

Lou,

It's a little early to be taking names, but I'd be delighted to have you there.    i need to find a place to host the event.    I have yet to contact anyone, to act as host.    Keep an eye on this thread, as the plans mature, it will be covered here.

Sounds like an unreal exoerience. I will be following this thread. Really would love to be able to attend.

I'd be down for making some templates, or laying out outlines on some blanks.    Shaping is a bit messy for most venues.

ya templates sound good

that is the start of most boards

maybe some longboards, midlengths, fishes, shortboards and some guns

I guess we could all bring our own 1x4 sheets and share and recieve

just a thought!

and maybe discuss what rails go good with each template

Bill, you could always use my garage for this. I have a vacumm system set up in there and a few planers.

Let’s discuss the merits of riding peanut shaped long boards in shin high waves.

I would like to see some templates, and examples of boards that were built from them.  I especially want to see examples of wooden boards, and Timberflex boards.  Hopefully, my 10’ solid balsa gun will be done by then.
