The origin of the paddle out?

Hey all,

I’m pretty new to the world of swaylocks and shaping.  Sadly, since joining it seems like a lot of shaping pioneers have passed away.  There always seems to be a paddle out going on somewhere as part of a memorial or to raise awareness for a good cause and I was just curious where that originated.  It’s a pretty cool thing to see that kind of support, unity, and good vibes in such an individual sport and it’s something I wish existed more in the world of skateboarding and snowboarding.  Just a thought.

Cheers
