6’ 11" x 23 1/2" x 2 5/8". 2# EPS. Resin Research Epoxy Resin. Balsa/Redwood Stringer
Ranger Rick said it was too dry for camp fires. The keg had not been tapped yet. So we sat around in the rain wearing ponchos and drinking rum. The goal is to get MarkSSD onto a smaller board. I have surfed with Mark several times at 6-8’ Terramar and overhead Tourmoline. He can ride big waves… Sways 2005…ask Mark…
So we wanted to make a gun type board but really thick and wider than your normal gun. Something a longboarder could ride in massive surf. Something around eight foot with lots of rocker…
Soo…We came home from Sways 2007 with lots of new friends and a concept for this board we wanted to build. Surf4fins had the foam and the rocker template. We Hotwired the blank extra thick. Mark wanted at least 3 1/4" thickness and we wanted to take out some of the rocker through the middle of the board. With the blank back at my place we cut it in half and started work on the stringer. Two redwood strips and one balsa. WOW ,what a pain…
The Balsa strips had been run through a planner. The Redwood was benderboard from Lowes. Next time we will run all the wood through a planner. So the glue up was not so good but that’s OK. We then messed around with an outline. Got something close and Mark went home with a new blank ready to shape. More story tomorrow…

A Fun Gun?
Looks great!
So the story goes on, I to the blank to shape proceded to get drunk that afternoon and over shaped the board.
Now I have an eight foot patatochip not good.
Showed it to Ray and I will let him tell the rest.
Hey stingray i am shaping a 6’11’’ that is pretty close to that shape, only 22’’ wide though. Interested to hear how yours rides. Mine has 5.2" nose rocker, and 2 1/2’’ tail. 16 3/4 nose, 15 1/8’’ tail.
Like that one, im gunna go single, but i’ll put side bites in too.
Nice looking board mate
“Got drunk and over shaped…” Ha! Isn’t that how half the design advancements have come about… “Been there, done that…”
You need more carrots!
Seriously - I love you guys! Here’s to Sway '08 - Bigger and better!

Man,
If I had a dollar for every project that went awry due to drink I would be able to buy more boards shaped by someone more talented than me.
So the eight footer is now a 2 7/8" potato chip with a warble and some crazy rocker. I just couldn’t scrap the project. The stringer had some crazy gaps too…
We took my 6’11" egg template and layed it out in the center of the blank. That took care of the gun rocker and a new project began. Mark modified my template into what you see. The finished thickness is about 2 5/8 but she’s fat out to the rails. The nose and tail are plenty thick too! We filled all those gaps in the stringer glue up with wood putty and after sanding I did fake wood grain with a brown pencil. The blank was spackled with DAP fast and final. All the Redwood dust that we did not get out of the foam turned black. Bummer…
We had planned on painting the board anyway. What appears to be a cutlap is actually done with a spray gun. Shipman taught me that trick. The fins are home made from old glass ons. ProBox side boxes , High Surf center box. Epoxy resin…
We power sand the hot coat with 100 grit and then do a second hot coat to seal off everything. I hand sand the final coat with 320 wet and then give it a little clear coat of floor finish…
MarkSSD picked up the board today.
Stoked!!!
Don’t worry too much about Mark…
Keith gave him a 9’6" gun last week
Just another Mark and Ray collaboration. Having fun with foam and fiberglass.
Keith Thank you for the gun, can’t wait for Big Sur Yah!!!
…GREAT to see you posting piccies again , Ray !!
