The pits!

I’m having problems with contamination on my hot coats. Is there anything I can use to maybe wipe down the board before hotcoating to remove any contamination. I’m getting pits in my hotcoats that are impossible to sand out. I was blowing the boards off with air but I’m starting to wonder if using some sort of tack cloth would be better. I don’t have good ventilation so i’m blowing dust everywhere and, and well, I guess I just answered my own question. Anyway, If anyone has any tips, I would be more than grateful. Thanks

Thanks Chris, your compressor might be the culprit, unfiltered, blowing oil. I suggest taking scrap fiberglass cloth, fold it so strings won’t come out, dipping it in acetone and wiping it down like that, don’t over wet your board, but give it a good wipe down. You will notice the acetone cutting into the lam resin, if this doesn’t solve the problem, you might not be using enough wax.

In addition to what Jim said you might be getting a few pits due to “pin air”.Squeegee your resin in before doing the brush strokes.I always do this on the bottom which has one layer of glass and is more prone to getting pin air if the lam is dry.I always wipe the board with acetone,I use white paper towels, never use towels with color as they might bleed.I also wipe the board before glossing.I also wipe twice after taking a dump (no acetone).

What are you using?Polyester or epoxy? …other than what has been mentioned,if you use the wrong paint (like krylon spray cans, untested inks, etc). It could be causing deep contamination, that comes up thru to the top layers. …Heat, cold, moisture, and humidity suck as well, and can cause a bad surface. …remember,no air flow,it should be dead calm when setting off brush coats.Herb

sorry for the delay. I’m using polyester. I was also running a fan at the time. Maybe my air compressor, maybe having the door wide open. I will definitly rethink my approach next time. Jim, Cleanlines, Herb, and the others who are to many to mention, Thanks a zillion for the advice you give. Very cool that you take the time.

the “locals” here at swaylocks def. deserve a lot of credit. much thanks …now for the pits…you need no air flow. a fan is totally out of the question. buy a good respirator, and have a good place to get away from the fumes. outside is full of oxygen.
