I bought it a couple of weeks ago , watched it a few times.
REally enjoyable very much on the same lines as Sprout , which is to be expected , I suppose.
It’s about the adventure and artistry side of surfing , (no skate punk and 20 airs per minute.)A fair bit of comedy too.
I personally think I might’ve liked a bit more surfing and a bit less incidental stuff - but the African drummers , a big portion on alaias( with some neat underwater footage) , make for variety and balance. My wife likes it too , put it that way.
I really got a lot of enjoyment out of it so far, watched it numerous times! It’s nice as a blend of a lot of different surfing… it’s certainly not your standard new-school thrusterfest sort of video, or a sampling of endless logging waves. The Indonesia section alone makes it worth it for me… Ry Craike’s tail slides stoke me beyond belief and Dan Malloy’s barrels are unreal… Siiick waves in Africa, some great fish surfing moments and some delectable noserides and trimming really round out the package. Way more enjoyment for me than the average vid, I have watched it many times as I said and I still get a ton of enjoyment out of it each time.
…BTW Ben I’m about to scrounge up some marine ply and start cranking out some fins in the next month or so… been getting some stoke out of some of the pics you’ve posted! … got a bunch of slots to fill, so to speak.
Classic… one of the best surf films to be made since the 70s. Would not be suprised to see the alaia movement blow up because of this film.
Loved it!
The Present is one of my favorite surf films of the past 15 years. The Africa segment is amazing, complete with original music. The film is unreal.
That is a great movie. Love Campbell’s work. If you liked his earlier works, can’t go wrong.
If you’re looking around at films … I also just saw Picaresque , which although it is a longboarding movie, is just plain really well done.
