"The Red Fin" in Longboard Mag

On Page 28 of the April/May issue of Longboard Mag, there is an ad for the “Red Fin,” a classic “narrow” nose longboard. I have seen several versions of this type of board over the years – I really dig the narrow nose and the aft volume design. Does anyone know what typical measurements of these boards were? And ohter design features? And, do they ride good – I would not use an retro fat fin but FCS sides and a slot for a 8" cutaway. Thanks Scott http://users2.fdn.com/~shine

If so they do have some sample dimensions etc. listed. I rode one of their perfecto models a while back. Verrrry nice. They make some good stuff. http://gordonandsmith.com/newsite/shapingroom/shapingframe.htm

on the link I just posted, you’ll see the shaping room title in the lower left corner. go to retro-the redfin is the first board listed.

Hynson is doing his thing (Hynson shaped and branded) and G&S are doing their thing (G&S team shaped and branded). http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2002/04/10/state1904EDT7868.DTL

He was looking for a replacement for his long lost, beloved Rick BK Model. The Red Fin was the genesis for the BK and evolved out of Hynson and BK’s days at Windansea. It had a lot more nose rocker than boards of it’s day and fairly knifey rails as I recall. They were really trying to move toward power surfing and rail turns. My bro-in-law also said his BK would nose ride like crazy. Haven’t heard a report on the Hynson. There’s a great legacy in these boards.

Bk was the epitome of power surfer. There was also a classic sequence of him at Sunset, circa 1969, a goober drops in ahead of him, BK passes him on the way down, passes him on the way up and still passes him again on his way back down. Goober was barely to his feet by the time all of this had happened. Surfer magazine banquet several years ago had BK present, guests were overheard asking “who’s that guy?”.

DAMN, so that’s who the guy was. I got fourth place, but who ever remembers that? Thanks for remembering, Jim.>>> There was a Rick Surfboards ad with BK at PB point, he was jammimg it off > the bottom, full rail turn, with his head and shoulders buried in the > falling lip. I have one of these, shaped by Hynson himself. The rocker is minimal, its fairly narrow(around 22", mine is a 9’6") The fin is not a fat noserider but a greenough inspired sleek and narrow single. This board trims unreal and will hold a high and tight line. Mine weighs well over 30 lbs. as it has 3 thick redwood stringers and heavy volan glass. The board is about 5 years old and the fin is glassed on. There is no leash plug. The new ones have a finbox. It would be blasphemy to make this board a tri-fin, as it is a board meant to be trimmed, not pumped. Thanks for the input. Got the dimentions from the site 15.5–22–16.5. I was mostly interested in the outline – not going with 30 pounds of glass – and more modern rails, rocker, etc. I love the look of a plain white board with a triple stringer! Had one, but never shaped one. Next project. Thanks Shine http://users2.fdn.com/~shine
