The semi offical Jersey Thread.

Todd,

I surf primarily on LBI, mostly in North Beach and
the south end. Sometimes I’ll go up and surf with friends in the Long
Branch/Monmouth area, but I find the waves are generally better down
here, and much less crowded.

That’s cool you got to check out
the Mahady shop. I’ve never been to anyone else’s shop (but my own) and
would love to see how other/more experienced people have their shop
setup and watch other people shape and glass. The only way really to
learn.

Seems like there could be enough people on here for a
Jersey Swaylock’s gathering. And speaking of gatherings, does anyone
know anything about AB3 East this year?

     Also, great waves
all week so far, hopefully get the tail end of this wind swell tomorrow
A.M., then a day’s rest before a hopefully really fun weekend
into next week. I’m gonna have to skip some work for this one.

And since there was a call for photos of boards from NJ, here’s a couple of mine.

First board (completed just over one year ago) - 5’5" Lis Fish (from Surfboard Design and Construction)

003 - 6’2" Hull (Side note: if anyone around has a Liddle or Andreini or Point Concepts or any kind of real hull that they’d be willing to let me try out sometime, that would be really great, because I’ve never ridden one, just read a lot of info on here about them, and made this one. It seems to ride like the descriptions I’ve read, and it surfs really great, I love it. I’d just like to check out some of the masters’ boards.)

004 - 5’7" x 2 1/4" x 19 1/2" quad w/ fins I made from cedar I salvaged from some cedar closet doors I removed at work. I have since discovered that, while cedar would probably make great glass-ons, it didn’t make great finbox fins, as I now only have three, and on a couple of them the glass is crushed where the screw holds the fin. Probably need to make a mold and really lay up the glass thick for it to hold without damage. A great learning experience, though, and I still love how the fins looked and worked, while they stayed in at least.

I’ve had a blast making all these boards and look forward to making tons more, and I’ve got mainly everyone here on Sway’s to thank for providing so much priceless information, without which I’d be horribly lost in the shaping/glassing room. Thanks!

Some pictures of Ocean City, New Jersey taken yesterday I found on the web.

New Jersey built boards in the snow.

dang! you guys got me kinda wishing i was from NJ! you guys got the stoke thing down pat!

that board looks the goods tbod... is it really as thick as it looks in the 2nd photo? or is that the angle?

Actual thickness is 2 1/2" because it has a 1/4" concave from nose to 1 foot at the tail.  Floats well haha.

It is painful to see those pics mako since I couldn't make it out.

Jersey built boards in the snow! Now there’s a good photo thread!

hecho en atlantic county, nuevo jersey......

a few boards I shaped and glassed in my garage, working on another but surfing will be the priority over the next few weeks, a luxury we don't get often enough

Tonight was reaaaalllly fun on the incoming tide.

My most recent. A 6’0" Diamond Tail quad with Kwick Kick over a US Blank.

Had a “mini NJ Swaylocks fest” with Greenlight Brian and a few others in some fun LBI surf today…

i assume you mean fishermans cove ? that place was a classic with  a bunch of old fisherman and younger surfers hanging out. surfed the fishermans cove shoulder to head high on a couple of rare days as it is normally a mushy longboard wave. the day  the county threw carl out of there is the day manasquan went down hill. who were some of the guys ripping the inlet back then that you remember

Here is a good video of one of our best Ocean City, NJ longboarders.  Bing teamrider Harry Gayle.

Todd… very nice boards… the girlfiriends parents are in Manahawkin so I am getting familiar with the spots on LBI…  Both South and North, but I am not there mush as we don;t see them as much as we probably should.

Waves were fun in Monmouth county yesterday. Not as big as down south gauging by those pictures but still fun.

Actually The coolest Surf Contest in the World was the Stone Steps  Just ask anyone who has ever surfer in a Stone steps contest.

[/quote]

OK, some explaining is in order.    The original contest, The 33rd Annual Stone Steps Contest, was a spoof of the growing ''contest'' mania.   Hansen employees, and Surfboards Hawaii employees making up the core of the ''contestants.''   Were you there for any of the first few of them?  The best part was the creative trophies.

Bill,  I attended a couple in the 70's  Most likely around 1972 / 73 Donald Takayama lived on La Mesa St in Leucadia at the time,  Just a stones throw from Stone Steps    He did a lot of practice for the Beer drinking part. He won.  At the time I had a house across the rail road on Vulcan Ave. I surfer Stone Steps and Beacons on a regular basis.

Hey artz,

This one’s a single fin. Didn’t want to complicate it too much with fin placements. Ekstrom’s boards are sweet, last years article about him in Surfer’s Journal inspired me to shape an asym for myself. I have another one in the works right now refining the rails and bottom contours. That will be a single fin as well but will drop some ProBoxes in after a few surfs to play with side fin setups.

This board has made surfing really fun for me again… I love testing new designs!

Hey Jamie

Yeah that was fun yesterday. We had 5 local homeshapers in the lineup sharing some nice waves.

I finally started to get a backside groove on with my asymmetrical board later in the day. Looking forward to taking it out this weekend in some juice.

~Brian

Nice looking asymmetrical  what is the fin set up on that board?

Have you been checking out Carl Eckstroms boards?  I Surfed one at Swamis in the early 1970's   The board I was riding seemed stiff front side. However going backside on the occasional left  it was a sweet.  Carl is still making them and his boards are stunning works of art. He is one of the masters of shaping and seems to be always slightly ahead of his time.

jerseygunshaped006.jpg picture by tjrm63Hopefully it will be big enough to take this out

Nice board Tom//////

Is that about a 9’ semi-gun? Love to see that coming down the line.

You ever get up to Loch Arrbor?
