The Shaping bug got to me....Advice on another blank needed...

I got a HUGE 8’0" blank that I’m gonna have to shape. It’s 4 1/4 inches thick - about 25 inches wide at the widest point. Little to no rocker. There is a TON of foam on this thing.

I’d like to get a board for my girlfriend out of it - but damn if I dont wanna shape a mini tanker. She can use my longboard to lazy learn with, but I want this board to be ready for her when she gets it going. I dunno…thinking maybe a 7’6" semi-gun. Maybe one of the classic Bing “teardrop” longboard/guns. Any ideas?

Since you already gots about a thousand boards to cover all SoCal conditions, why not shape yourself a true gun, for California big waves, go to LJCove or T’s Jalama, and use it?

8’ x 21 x 12.5 nose, 12" tail, 3.15 thick (sounds thick, until you take it out in DOH) with WP just about centered. Narrow nose to penetrate offshore winds.

With that much thickness, you can go full double concave, which basically thins out that 3.15 down to duckable volume.

With single, you get better drop in speed, but maybe get hung up in kelp.

Glass it strong, strong enough for days like the last few at OBSF, about 3’ bigger than Abs or Blacks.

That board sounds a lot like my now-wall-hanger gun that I used to have. Actually seems like your idea has some merit LeeD - only problem is that my gf would get absolutely 0 use out of it. On any day where it’s a bit overhead (Like this morning, when I went out with my 8’6") she freaks out and wont even really watch. So…yeah. That definately has some merit though - because I doubt I’m gonna have another chance to go for the 3.15, and I like your idea about the thickness.

LeeD - just a question for ya because you’re probably the only one responding tonight before I go ask Phil tomorrow, what all do you know about the those “Bing-style” “teardrop” boards? It seems they would hold in bigger surf, and have the same type of “classic California gun” feel to them - I’m just not sure about the super wide nose or what advantages that holds. To me it seems more of a pintail longboard than anything, which I would have no use for - but the idea certainly looks a bit interesting. What’s your thoughts?

Also, if anyone else wants to chime in with suggestions - lemme know. Great idea LeeD - I’m definately gonna consider it. And I’m gonna be taking a week trip up to Monterey then OB sometime next week to see rooster and a couple other guys - if you’re around we should paddle out sometime - or I can watch you play my gf in tennis. (She stomps me on a consistent basis, so I wouldnt provide any competition.)

Bryan, for sure, lets make an attempt.

Next week might still be offshore winds, and Blakstah and Mr.Doof are surfing DOH/TOH OB all this week. I’m still gimped, but should be fine next week.

Post on here, I’ll give you my phone… 1-510-883-9313…leave message.

Two of my old girlfriends learned to surf on my Brewer 8’9" and 8’ guns. Narrow enough for them to carry and paddle, floaty enough to catch waves easily, and gunny enough so it turns from anywhere’s on the board, skill level not required.

I HATE with a passion, any big wave board with wide noses. Maybe 'cause around here, for it to be surfable, winds have to be offshore. Narrow noses penetrate and point downwards, doing 1/4 of the work for you to catch waves.

Holding power is not a problem, as any tail narrower than 13" holds fine with a 8.5" single fin. Any wider, go sidebites/tri/quad/twin, but little toe in.

Blakstah’s been riding something like a 10’8"er around here lately, even tho two years ago, he said it never got over 12’ at OB.

Moderate swell, somewhere around 7-10’ should be in late in the week next.

Yesterday, TOH on sets, lined to the horizon, and me no taker, not with a peashooter 8’ Plumeria. One of my buds was out on a 11’ x 22" beyond gun.

Tennis good. Last day, Tuesday, played first day without knee pain…but got double tennis elbow and glass wrist… ha ha, nothing ever comes together completely.

Tell her to bring racket. GoldenGate Park has 21 public courts.
