A guy asked me to build him something along the lines of a “The Shorty” by Bob “the Greek” Bolen as pictured here with a winged rounded pin tail. The shorty is called a short longboard and I was wondering if anyone has info on the shape as I’ve never had my hands on one yet.
Most importantly I’m looking for rocker, bottom contour, and rail shape info as I’ll tweak this outline a bit.
I’ll probably make it 7’4" x 2 5/8" thick EPS / bamboo construction. The guy is a somewhere between beginner - intermediate, 5’11", 155 lbs, and wants a shorter, more maneuverable board than his 9’0" noserider for Jersey summer conditions.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
~Brian

I was actually playing around with a similar idea on AKU today. Mine was a 7’0" but I played with it a bit to make a 7’4". I wanted a funboard/short longboard that I could nose ride on a slow sandbar break. I am still very inexperienced in surfboard building and my Aku skills arn’t that great yet. Also, I’m not sure if I exported the pdf correctly so I attached the .brd and .pdf files.
Greenlight- I’m not sure if this is what you wanted, but it might help or at least get the creative juices flowing…
Heres the dimensions:
Length- 7’4"
1" nose- 17 5/8"
1" tail- 13 3/8"
Thickness- 2 3/4
Rocker: Nose- 4 1/2" Tail- 2 5/16"
Like I said, I am very inexperienced so any criticism is welcome.
Hey YankeeSurfer,
Thanks for the input. No PDF was attached but no worries. The dim numbers you wrote will give me something to play with and tweak.
I’m thinking of shaping in a slight concave in the nose going to flat to “V” out the tail. Looking to make a board to hook right into the pocket and take a quick step up to the nose…
Thanks again,
~Brian

don’t know what kind of fin setup you were thinking of, but here’s my ideas:
for that type of board I think that a traditional thruster setup is less than ideal. you’re still going to want to trim and glide with that shape, otherwise you would just be on a shortboard, right? So go single fin? I don’t know, might work. But I can guarantee that blakestah’s setup with the surftrux will work great. Turn on a dime, but still trims and glides. I’ve got it on my go to board which is 7’1, and on a 9’4 longboard.

Hey Pat,
Thanks for the input.
I agree a thuster setup would not be the best for this type of board. I’ll be doing a 2 + 1 setup with ProBoxes and bamboo fins. That way there’s a ton a versatility and the guy I’m building the board for can figure out what setup he likes best for his style. Says he wants to nose ride it so definitely a big centerfin will help.
Hell, maybe I’ll make it a 4 + 1 and he can try it as a quad too! I love the possibilities…
