"the slab"....

dimensions:-

21" roundnose x 5’8 x 24 1/2" x 2 1/2 " x 18 1/2" x 11 1/2" pod

1/4" wing , at 7 1/4" up

14" finbox, also at 7 1/4" up [!]

…a 1970’s margaret river [‘hardy surfboards’] kneeboard…

2 questions…

  1. how would a winged keel go in this ? [I’m thinking… to hold the massive tail in ?!]

  2. how far forward / back in the box do you reckon the fin should go , for starters ?

I’m wanting to try it tomorrow [wednesday here in woz], haven’t kneeboarded since about 1980, and thought I’d give it a go…

any advice [preferably from kneeboarders, if you still exist ?] MUCH appreciated ....

        thanks !!

‘chip’ … photo attachment… [hope it worked ?]

ummm… how do you send maybe two photos at once ?

… like a top and bottom, and/or logo shot, for example…I’ll try again, sorry veterans, please bear with me…

PC Crozier Slabs typically had the large Scythe single

fin set at 17".

The boards worked mainly through straight rocker, full outline and

thin holding rail lines.

The fin contributed through direction and flex

rather than specific hold and stiffness.

Sorry I cant answer your specific questions.

Give it a go and report.

Sounds like a good idea.

I’m with Hal, for the same reasons- I found that on my wider, fuller outlined boards ( though generally smaller than 5’8" ) a smaller, less positive fin worked better. Let the rail do the work, having a little sideslip ability can be might nice from time to time.

'Course, that’s got a lot to do with my style and what I like to do on a wave, like he said, ‘give it a go’ .

hope that’s of some use

thanks , doc and hal , for the feedback…

Well, so far , I’ve had it out in head high [bigger when I’m kneeling!!!] surf with a 7.5" deep, 5" base [unfortunately] polycarbonate fin. Haven’t used the winged keel…yet.

I sideslipped on EVERY wave. I wondered …about moving the fin towards the back of the box, about where I was [and, was MEANT to be !] kneeling, and the whole unfamiliar dynamics of kneeling airdrops/wipeouts/nosedives on the bottom turn issues…

More practice / finesse / maybe a different fin /position needed. I talked to a few guys who still kneel here, but they all ride either quads, thrusters …or TWINNYS, believe it or not!

I even stood on a couple of waves… sideslips, yes… you’re not wrong !!

I’ll persevere with it… here’s a shot of my other options though, so it may not end up getting ridden that often , ESPECIALLY with summer flatness here fast approaching !

          ben

so… did you ever get it going well? I ask because I will not have my spoon started for quite some time and wanted to try knellin’ on my 5’7" 21" 4" stubbie.

Thanks for asking Josh !

actually …this is out at "Hicksy’'s , awaiting “fishing” …

I remember reading the late Peter Crawford saying he “filled in a spoon’s template” [with deck foam …ie he used the whole blank, no concave in the deck ] to arrive at “the Slab” .

ben

[p.s. - here’s a mid-ground compromise to consider maybe , Josh …quicker , less glass weight , and probably easier ??..]

Thanks for posting that Chip!

Maybe if you ‘fish it’ you should keep some kneelo qualities, so you could try it kneeling too.

I think my spoon will have SOME foam in the centre simaler to a Hayden I saw in Australian longboarding. article about ‘The lovin’ spoonful.

My plan is if the centre still has some foam it will require less glassing and will still flex and maintain the ‘soul’ of the spoon…

Catchya.

yes , I kneel on my 20" wide 5’11 prawn [“fish”] from time to time …

with 5’8 this time , I may widen it and keep the original rails , pretty much …depends how easily the glass comes off [a few rail dings]
