G’day Lindseypaige,

Brain surgery, curing cancer and surfing itself are hard.

Making surfboards is not, Making surfboards that work well last a long time and look good is hard. But like anything practice is the key.

Shape the board in you backyard on an ironing board or down the park on the picnic table. Or better still at someone elses place.

Good luck

Daren.

P.S. Start with the archives on here, hundreds if not thousands of useful tips ,hints and shortcuts.

Like Entity says, in fact thats the best swaylocks advice I’ve heard in ages. I’ll vouch for it, I’ve made a few now, different materials, wood, foam, eps, and none of them work brilliantly, look fantastic or have lasted forever, but I’ve loved every minute of making and surfing each of them.

Best thing I’ve done so far was to make some half decent stands to shape on, I wish I’d done that before I started the first one.

Get to it and post pictures as you go.

Make a simple set of “T"s out of 2x4 lumber and screws. The top of the T should be about a foot wide. The post of the the T should be tall enough so that you can bury them in the ground 18”-24" using a post hole digger and be able to work on the board at about belly high. Pad the top of the ends of the T with foam, old beach towels, etc… so the board rests on the padding at the rails, but the stringer is off the T. Shape under a tree at the beach maximum soul.

Crude, but effective… works better than saw horses.

“Shape under a tree at the beach maximum soul.”

Oooohhhhhh yeahhhhh! Just remember to clean up the foam dust after you done.

There are loads of ingenious shaping stand ideas on a thread called “show us your shaping stands” (I think). My favourite were the cheapo white patio chairs with the cut outs and padding, that and Chip’s ironing board.

I remember seeing some shaper(s) that would "oversee" anyone's first board shape - throw 'em some cash, they get the blank, you use their room and tools, and they guide you through the process. Glassed on site too? I want to say it was Socal somewhere, anyone else know? Info on Surfline? Maybe Google "build your first surfboard". Seems the most logical approach if you have no place to do it. Plus you get invaluable (trust me!) basic building skills/tips/tricks. And with the guidance you should come out with a very rideable board. Ask around, there's still some quality people out there. Avoid the condescending ones like the plague! Smiling faces and all that (like the song). Good luck and as always ...
