The ultimate one board quiver.

It’s always been a subject thrown around by surfers.

It goes something like this “if I was stuck on an island with only one board it would be a…”

Well what would it be for you?

Any design , any construction method ,any materials.

Who has the ultimate design and why?

prob. a mid range egg with a 2plus1 set up.

I could ride pretty much everything.

It would also be glassed real heavy.

This is my one board quiver, does most things in most waves

cheers Joe

Depends on the island!!

Are we talking Hawaiian-like island or a regular island with a regular set of waves?

For regular surf id probably go with my 5’5" Lis-styled fish with a bit more rocker and drawn in a bit at the tail, it rides everything sweetly!

The board I’m showing can’t answer if this it is the ultimate design by any stretch but for my own personal preference it has set the bar for all my next boards to follow… This is a great question. We were just talking about this the other day… The board below is by far my favorite all arounder. Its my SUP 9’-6" I found a fin set up that has taken this board from really fun to Magic status in my quiver… Doesn’t matter what kind of wave, it goes where I want and it even nose rides good for how pulled in the nose is… For my weight, surfing style and abilities its my Magic board! I going to cut more of them so I have a stash.

These photos were taken back with a fin set up I would deem as average compared to how it works now… I love that thing!!!

Its the 9-6 on the right…

Materials: I’d want something that will last forever, so some sort of space age composite. I’d just have to get used to the “feel,” which, for me, is only relative, and is not a make-or-break matter.

Design: I’m really starting to become attracted to this quad fin, all arounder concept… a little wider, a little shorter, a little flatter, a little more surface areaand a little thinner in the tail. Right now I’m just stoked on this, maybe because it’s new to me, or maybe because I like the idea of a board that’s faster than a normal thruster but just as responsive. Shorter/wider/flatter for small surf, but not fish dims. More shortboard than fish, but with the fish-like advantage of being able to ride in a variety of waves, from waist high mush to big barrels.

I’m with Laird, if I only had one board it would be a 12 footer: This one which can handle anything a shortboard can !

It was the statement from Laird that got me really thinking on what would be my choice for the ultimate board if I could only have one.

You see a surfer of his ability and exposure to surfing on a level that most of us can barely fathom choose a 12’ longboard as his one and only, why?

Obviously a 12’ board lets you surf under head high surf even under knee high with a high level of stoke. In most parts of the world this size surf constitutes probably 75% of the surfable days.

My personal one board quiver would be a composite construction performance 9’1",2+1 fin setup something like the Takayama ’ Noah Shimabokuro’ model of been riding for 12mths. Fast , can be surfed off the tail like a shortboard yet trims through a dead section and also noserides quite well, I’ve surfed mine in waves 1- 10’ and it feels solid in all situations.

For me this board is the best blend of all my boards.

The varied responses really demonstrate that that the feeling you get from surfing is unique to each rider, it could be from an egg or a fish or CarveNalu’s awesome SUP, but the bottom line is whatever works for you.

Greenough likes a mat cause he can sleep on it too.

Mooneemick

Im with mooneemick on this one. I have a 9’ eaton zinger that I ride in everything from an ankle slapper to overhead. It rides like a shortboard, well as close as a longboard can, but you can still get up on the nose. This is accually my “big” wave board, thin enough to duck dive. So I would have to say for around NC a one board quiver has to be something like that.
