thickness of the glosscoat

Hey guys,

I’m close to finishing my third board. It’s a 6,7 single fin ! I’m pretty excited !

I was wondering how thick the glosscoat should be ? The board doesn’t look saturated. I’m aplying the coat with a brush.

My longboard, which was shaped in france by Town & Country looks pretty solid and the glosscoat is pretty thick I think…

Yeah Rene’! Busting out #3!  Are you talking “hotcoat”? I use a 4" brush, apply pretty liberally lengthwise, then brush out with oblique side to side strokes, first the length of the board one way, then the other. With good light you can see how even your coat is by the subtle color of the resin. “Paste” your laps and all the places that get heavy sanding first. You can probably find better info if you poke around searching “hotcoat” “fill coat” and “pasting”. I just finished a modified version of my 6’ square-tail, ready to glass. Hope yer getting some good waves! Peace!

my goal when im doing hotcoats and glosscoats is to make them thin as possbile.

What are you excatly using for the glosscoat ?

Every coat of resin, from lam to gloss, should be as thin as possible. Otherwise, you are wasting resin, adding unnecessary weight, and creating a board that will chip and crack more readily than one with an economical use of materials.
