Im pretty comfortbale on mid length boards, like minimals, but i have been thinking of something like this, but with a bit more performance, and for waves 4-6’, maybe a bit bigger. A “fun gun” sounds like it might be that kind of board. So, what kind of waves is a fun gun designed for?? and, for a 5’10’‘, 85kg intermediate surfer, what kind of dims would be appropriate. Im comfortable up to 7’6’’ in length, and width and thickness doesn’t worry me. Any pics would be much appreciated too.
P.S i write this post because we have had a week of decent swell, and i struggled this morning with paddling with the the current that comes with decent sized waves, and also a flat, wide nosed board.
Beery, I reackon go a 7’6 with a round pin . width and thickness to suit your size but not to wide cause you want it gunny. go your normal thickness and hide a quarter of an inch or an eighth of an inch along the stringer. extra paddle. you need speed and control also wnt it a bit lively in smaller waves so concaves or double concave ,single to double. double concave will let you move along the board a bit. thruster set up but go a system so you can play with fin size. 6& 4 0n te deck and 6oz on the bottom. use aburford 7’8 k ring up and talk to brett, they are good guys. Now grab a beer ! drink it ! go to toilet, make sure you was your hands ring burfords, strike while the iron is hot. try 20& 1/4 for width and 2&7/8 thik but shape it so rails would go on a 2&3/4. ciao
in my heavily biased opinion, if you’re not afraid of thickness, tail width and single fins you could try a Nugget style planshape 7’0" x 14"N x 20 1/2" x 16"T x 3" with a gently rolled bottom from nose to tail. Good for up to about 8’ without any trouble.
Or the same board as a thruster with slightly sharper rails in the rear third of the board.
If you haven’t surfed something like this before though, it would be wise to try one as you may not you may not like how they feel compared to flat/concave combination bottom. But I like 'em.
Interesting post mate. My twin keel has a 16’’ nose and tail, and is 3’’ thick with a lot of volume in the nose and tail, and i love it, so i probably would like one. How do you shape the rolled bottom???
If your going to go a nugget get one shaped because that loaded dome bottom is hard to replicate. they are an awsome board to ride . seriously if you want agun to use you want it to look gunny nugets don’t.
Good point mate, im thinking of a mid length shotboard shape i can also ride in average ( but not tiny ) days, if im going 7’ish i wont need heaps of thickness.
RDM, My latest project, a single, is nuggety, 15’’ tail, 14’’ nose, and 3’’ thick by 20.5 wide. Im not intending to copy a nugget, just something similar in regards to planshape and volume. hmmm so many options!!
Howzit Beerfan, Here on Kauai a fun gun is a totally different animal. They are like a longboard but between 8’ and 9’ a little narrower than usual and a pulled in nose and tail. They are ridden in surf that is 6’ to 10’ Hawaii scale.Aloha,Kokua
Kokua, that is correct , In oz the funboard or hybrid minimal with a pulled in nose can be dapted to a gun shape . where as in the islands a gun is usually a full on rhino chaser in oz it is about 7 to 8 ft . Mine is 7’6 Good for the biggerer waves I get on the East Coast of Ozzie.
