thruster fin size

What’s the application of smaller/less area thruster fins (4 1/4 - 4 3/8 HxB) other than for small peolpe? Would small fins with tip flex loosen up a bigger guy’s board in small surf? Would too much drive be sacrificed?

It has alot to do with whether you surf front foot heavy, rear foot heavy or 50/50. If you surf front foot heavy, small fins for big guys are not a great combo. But, if you surf rear foot heavy you can probably get away with it and reduce some drag. I surf pretty 50/50 and like a pair of medium size fairly vertical side fins (X-4s in Red X) and a small tralier fin (X-1).

what size are the X-4, X-1?

X-1 is 4-1/8" Base X 4-3/8" Depth X-4 is 4-3/8" Base X 4-5/8" Depth You can check out the templates at www.redxfins.com

I ride the small protek fins(4.25") on a 6’10" in small/mid sized waves and think they are great. Less drag for sure. But I think I ride the board more of the rails then off the tail. regards, Håvard

…I prefer Red-X: X-1s all the way around for small to moderate waves, and X-7s for bigger stuff. The X-4s are the ticket when it’s really round and big.Herb

any suggestions on smaller/small wave o’fish’l fins for a big guy (200) on a 7’2" hybrid?..I’m currently usng the Stewart set which is great in larger surf at high speeds, but is stiff and releases poorly off the top in small surf. (ww.ofishl.com)
