Since I know there are some bonzer afficianados here, thought some of you might get a kick out of this.
Nice Stuff JJR. how bonzer like will the fins go without the concaves?
thanks HEAPS for that Jim,
It’s GREAT to see photos of the process ! Now I’m looking at two of my single fins … thinking … [to be continued …]
So, when [if ever?] are Lokbox systems going to be available in Australia ? They would have to be lighter , [hopefully] quicker, and easier than doing THIS , I would assume ??
How many different bonzer runner templates do you , and “Rainbow Fin Co.” have available, Jim ?
And , HAVE you ever made any THREE fin bonzer runners ? [ie the old , long based original side runners] , or have 5 finners taken over totally in your neck of the woods ??
cheers mate !!

Ill be coming to OZ hopefully this fall (our fall). Funny you should ask about the 3 fin side runners Chip! Working on some for Joel Tudor surfboards right now as we speak. We have a couple different bonzer side fin templates, but we pretty much stick to the original Malcolm template. Thanks
…which WAS ???
Do you have any photos of ?recent? bonzer3 templates please ?? [ie: the ones for Joel ?]
cheers Jim !

Jim , would you ever attempt a thruster to 3 FIN bonzer conversion , with the original 7-9" base , 2-3" deep runners ?

[or, has "Moonlight Glassing already done a few , I wonder ? …was Taylor Knox’s bonzer conversion like this ?]
Or … would the lack of deep concave in today’s thin blanks kinda defeat the purpose ?
just curious, because …

Hey Ben, visit: www.bonzer5.com and www.houseofbonzer.com
Sure you visit those sites before but take a look at the boards and you’ll see some three finned bonzers and the side fins templates.
thanks heaps Coque …the house of bonzer ‘vintage bonzers’ [?re-releases?] look nice …good bonzer runners shots, indeed !

i realize that the single to double concave stuff was done by the malcomb brothers and really feel that that is their true gift to surfboard design.
is it fair to give them credit for the modern thruster though? looking at pictures of old magazines it seems as if the thruster was a modification of the twin fin and the bonzer the modification of the single fin. one added a trailer to a twin fin and the other added sides to a single fin. it wasnt the bonzer that brought the thruster into the limelight either it was simon anderson. i love the way bonzers look (never surfed one) but i wonder why alot of people insist that the bonzer was the forefather to the thruster. am i wrong?
I agree.

I think people say that because malcolm was dabbling with 3 finned boards as early as 1970. Others did it before that, but nobody heard about it really. Chip, you’ve seen the template…
Haven’t done a thruster to 3 finned bonzer conversion as of yet, but it’s definately possible. I’ll retro fit anything if the price is right! LOL
they’re only small ones Jim …about 4-5 base x 2-3" depth , are they ??
I was wondering if you’ll make special 7-9" base , 3" deep bonzer [?“old school”?] runners for Joel’s boards ?
Or, would the Lokbox System not allow enough “overhang” ? [I’m figuring I can do that with 10" or so fins unlimited boxes , but the weight and thickness in the rail would be prohibitive …probably better just glassing them on , and a back finbox ! ]
cheers mate !
ben
Already made 'em. Just trying to figure out the curvature on the bottom edge of the fin(part that contacts board) due to the long base. We got kelp over here. Can’t have “kelp catchers”.
For your purposes…glass-on is the only way. For now. Laters
you’re curving them ??
cool …I’d like to see those !!
ben
Had to increase foil thickness also to avoid the front edge being able to flex from side to side. Lucky for me the Joel scan is close to Malcolms and relatively flat through the fin area. The curvature is only on the front portion of the fin, and is minimal. Not too many of these things being built here right now, but could be more in the future. Hard to really put too much effort into now with so much other stuff going on…
Wish you could be here for the fish fry -
and don’t I wish so , even more !!
I would be the photographer for THAT gathering , for sure , running around like a fish fiend , taking shots of all the boards !
Hey , by the way , that was a great sequence of you getting tubed on your fish that ‘slaven’ took on the surfer forum…was that at a break near you ?
It looked like a nice clean [glassy] day eh ?
… well done mate !
ben
hey Jim ,
you just got me thinking …it could be feasible for me to do a slight amount of front to back curve in the next fins I mould bases for [side bonzer runners] for the fu boxes two of my boards have for side fins …what say you , good idea ? [lay them up over curved perspex or similar]…I take it you’ve seen the base moulding previous thread of PlusOneShaper’s , and mine ?
ben
Lokbox, you mention on this post that Malcolm uses the same position for his rear side runners that a thruster set has on his side runners. So i wonder if Malcolm also uses the same toe in, because if he does, since the cant on your system is on the fins, it would be possible to try the same board as a bonzer 5 or a thruster and really test the difference (using a FCS adaptor on the center box, or just an smaller center fin).
This is really interesting for me since i have a couple of Lokbox Bonzer sets and i’m in a doubt with my next board: i don’t know if i want to do a thruster or go with my first bonzer.
Thanks!
Coque.
Hi Chipfish,
I was wondering if you could tell me what size those “side” finboxes in your board are (approximate exterior dimensions and fin thickness would be great) and where you got them from. I am in Vic and looking to do a similar thing to my first board (all thanks to Swaylocks). Many thanks.
private message sent , sir…
