Thruster w/carnards; placement help

I’m hoping someone can give me some advice on a thruster setup with carnards. 6’ x 13.5 x 20 x 15 x 2.25. I’m thinking a slight panel vee with a shallow single to double concave. 4" nose rocker, 2" tail. Low, boxy rails with a medium/soft bottom edge and slight bevel/chine, hard in tail. Single wings and 6" swallow tail. 2 4oz deck, 1 4oz bottom, sand to 320. I want to get better at rail to rail surfing. Hopefully the thruster with forward carnards will be fast with decent hold, but relatively loose when wanted. Any advice on fin setup, or comments on my spec’s are appreciated.

…John, USE THE ARCHIVES…type in the words “Superchargers”,and “C-5”,then come back to the discussion board if you have any further questions.Herb

Herb, after your suggeston I went back and read every archived post on superchargers and C-5 setups. I am now much more informed, and I would be very grateful if you could give me some specific advice on my setup. Dimesions- 13.5 x 20 x 15. I have a bunch of FCS fins and I’m not sure what to go with. G2, G3, G5, or GPR. I also have some different size center BOX fins; I want to keep things light but maybe putting a small center box in would make the setup more versatile? The carnards sound similar to your superchargers, they are 1" x 1", for an FCS plug. If you could help me out with your suggestions on fin placement I would be so stoked! Thanks, john c.

…John, …In my opinion my Superchargers are more versatile than Rusty’s C-5,and can be adapted to any side finned board.Where as the C-5 is a specific board design, and lacks versatility. As far as side fin size goes, that would depend on your weight, age, experience, board design, and length of board…possibly. …In a Thruster type set-up I set my sides @ 12" and my center @ 4-41/2".I run the Superchargers between 1" thru 1-1/2" out/away from the sidefins, and half of the chargers base length in front/behind of the leading edge of the sidefins. …Rusty has ,over the years moved his C-5s back and in tighter, simular to my Superchargers, but the template still remain very large…eg.Supercharger=1-1/8"base x 1-1/4"tall, in approx.size,C-5=2-1/4"base x 2-1/2"tall.Rusty’s newer C-5 carnard designs have gone from a netural rake to conventional sweeped back design. My superchargers have evolved into a tipped forward negative rake design to eliminate any unneeded fin area. …The center box idea has been done by me for years now and can be viewed on the photo page check out the 6’,7’,8’,“size range” boards,in resources,I think you’ll be pleasantly suprized.Any other question?Herb

Thanks Herb. You can see I have little experience with thrusters, let alone carnards. How far off the rail for the side fins? What angle for the side fins? Straight at nose, 1-2" off nose? How about the carnards, a little more straight than the sides? Side fin tilt at 4 degrees, carnards at 1 degree? I’m going with the box too. Thanks again bro, john c.

…1-1/4" off the rail from the trailing edge, toed out 3" past the nose.Cant @4-5 degrees.Rusty put a little more toein in his carnards as well, he cants them a degree or two more.I have found this works well for certain conditions and boards, It depends on what level of performance you are looking for. …I set my chargers alittle straighter in toe,and cant them 1 degree less,2 degrees for extreme boards like a mid range hyper gun.Herb

Herb, I cannot thank you enough. It is the masters such as yourself who make Swaylocks what it is. For you and many others it may be second nature, but for the newbie underground it is the beginning of the journey. Take care my friend- john c.
