Thumby Round Tail Fish 6'0 Quad opinions and expertise needed.

Whats up fella’s,

I am about to start cutting up a US blanks 6’5"A Fish blank. I need a little advice and opinion before I get into this tonight. This is also my first quad in my quiver, as well as the first one Ill ride and my fourth build. I am 175 lbs and 5’11. Im using shape3d lite on this.

It is 6’ x 21 x 2 5/8" thick. … tail is 16.25" inches (round n thumby) and the nose is 16.5 inches. I was thinking of going 21 inches wide, and making the tail 16 inches…but now im just nitpicking and cant decide. The widepoint is 3" plus center.

Next, Tail rocker at 2.25" and nose rocker at 5" . Bottom contour would have a single concave starting at 18 inches from nose then into a spiral vee…but should i just maybe use a single concave until i get to tips of front fins? My last two boards were 6-6’3 single fins with single to double concave…I LOVE THEM…but im lost with quads. or maybe bring the concave to inbetween the fins and drop in a small vee at tail.

I cant decide on rails though. I know the hard rail in tail will be starting about and inch infront of front quad fins. but im thinking a tucked under edge or just really down with flat deck. More modern rails than a retro fish board. any suggestions?

As far as glass, Im using 4 oz S cloth. I have 10 yards of it, but also some 4 oz E and 6 oz E. I was going to do 4 X 4 S on the top, and 4 OZ S on bottom with a 4 oz E tail patch for the Future Quad set up patch. Should I put the E cloth over or under the S cloth? I have a few gallons left of Poly resin but I know a lot of people use epoxy with 4 oz S cloth. Is this cool? I never used epoxy. Blue pigment is being use on laminate layer, then the hotcoat. no gloss (which i have done on the last 3 boards).

As far as quad placement… i was thinking rear fins 5 inches from tail with no toe. 4 degree cant and 1.75 inches from rail. then front fins 11.25 inches from tail with 1/4" toe. 1.5 inches from rail…possible might stick in an extra future box for a small center fin for fun.

I ride normally in DE/MD head up to jersey or down to the outer banks. What I usually ride are a longboard, 6'3 single, 7'0 thruster, and 6'6 thruster. I dig a fast drive and a little spray.

Any response is a good response. thanks

Hi Garret,

re " I dig a fast drive and a little spray." You could try a twin fin set up instead of a quad. I’ve never really enjoyed riding quads, though I know plenty who love them, I found on fishes the drag was too much but then hey everyone I know disagrees. I’ve surfed two quads and in both cases infinitely increased my enjoyment (freedom to move) by taking out two fins. Definitely with you on the thumb tail though, my tail of choice. 21" seems pretty wide, if it were for me I’d put some little wings on something that wide to make it less like an egg (and stop the comedians asking which way round it’s meant to go). I’d definitely put that extra fin box in, gives you more options later.

shit, forgot to wish you luck… Good luck

thinking of width I narrowed it to 20.5 inches…i cant stop playing with shape3d…

Here is template picture I reduced rocker in front to 4.5…width back to 21 inches, and i pulled in the tail at about 11 inches

Garrett,

Good luck with your shape. After you read all the suggestions and advice, go with your gut instinct, you probably know what you need better than anyone else. Looking forward to seeing photos of the finished product.

Seems like the nose rocker could be a little abrupt. Not the 4 1/2" but the transition from the flat into the nose. Maybe move the transition a touch back toward the tail.

Please check out this board in the archives…

My opinion…it’s not a fish without a fish tail… you have a …fish egg…guppy…Thumby Round Tail Quad…

Nice out line…go with it…rocker looks good…don’t over think it in the computer. You will feel it come together as you shape it. …

Ray,

that board in the link is sick. My glass job isnt going to be as pretty but thats half the fun. It is definately similar board. Ill feel the rocker out a bit and just go slowly when i get to it. I can see that it has a slight hump to it in the picture. time to turn on the heater in the shed.deeeeep breathe n go time.

thanks for the feedback, everyone

just to comment…first time using US BLANKS foam… i have used clark superblues, and ICE 9 blanks…i prefer IC9 and Clark over USB. US Blanks seemed to chip and the stringer lightly stained its surrounding foam…Im am finishing rails right now…first 15 inches is a down but slight egg rail ( up at nose)…to a tucked under edge slightly down…and razor sharp the last 15 inches toward tail. Im putting a very gentle single concave starting 18 inches from nose for about 3 feet into a slightly more pronouned double C until about 8 inches from the tail.

and a question…any tricks for fiberglassing the bumps towards the tail? Like a slit at the bottom part of the bump?

prelaminate a 1/2" wide strip of glass running along the bump in the wing area. Use 4 oz because you want it to lay smooth. A little resin on your finger tip to smooth it out. After it dries, Tdo the main glassing. Then relief cut at the tip of the bump as usual.

Nice, thanks man…just to update…if anyone reads this…my back fins are 5 inches from tail…1/8th toe in…front fins are 11 inches with 1/4" toe in…I did stick a center future box 3.5 inches from the tail…I think i may have wanted it to go either back 1/4 inch for a thruster or maybe in line with the rear fins but whatever…it is what it is…Now all i need it so find a small fin for that box ( if i choose to use it). I might just sand down a center future fin to a smaller size…less area…maybe a little thinner…or use that crazy center fin from the Schimitar (or whatever) trio i have on my fatty Ashton… …Ill be using standard Vector 2 quad set up for the quad part…

Done shaping. Dimensions are 5’11 3/4" (due to the fact i didnt like the nose I ended up with on the 6’0 version) by 21 wide, with 15 3/4 tail (where the bumps are which are at 12 inches now), and 16.5 inch nose…but before i glass i may bring it in a bit…probably not…2 5/8 inch thick with a shallow single concave starting at 18 inches, into double right before the front fins, then flat.

If anyone can enlighten me on the 5 fin system, id appreciate it. Im going to make another board almost just like this, a little more thin (width to 20), different tail, and with the 5 fin option…after the 6’8 single fin that is next.

edit # 5 …The front fins are 1.5": from rail

the rear fins are 1.25 " from rail…but mind you their is a bump @ 12 inches
