I've just checked in after a long absence, due to the usual culprits, and it's great to see how things have developed. Particularly Berts movements, good onya! I currently have a hollow wood (long term) on the go, and I am wondering about laminating over stain. Due to limited resources here, I am using only Lauan ply, and to create a Jensenesque effect, I'll need artificial colouring. I read a post by halcyon relating to Poly over oily timber, but couldn't find anything specifically relevant. Thanks for any advice
Not sure I can help you much with poly lamming over Lauan ply. I know that timber is supposed to have a relatively high oil content, but I would think the usual precautions for glueing it up would give you a good lam bond.
Why do you think the stain is going to make a difference? Interested to hear this
I am a metal worker by day, and this is my first real attempt at woodworking, so I was just curious about whether stain would affect the bond. I'm loving the timber, but am a complete beginner. It's good fun though, eh?
I would avoid oil based stains. Use water or alcohol stains. Wood needs to be dry and sand only to about 80 gt. Seal wood with a coat or two of brushed on resin before glassing. Poly or epoxy?
