i am planning on doing a tinted lam with tinted deck and bottom. i am not too sure about something…after cutting the deck layer laps, the ones which wrap to the bottom, what will keep them smooth so that they don’t stick out when it comes time to sand? should i do a little “basting”? will the hotcoat cover it nicely? or hit 'em with the grinder? is it ok to grind down tinted cloth, or will it become discolored?

Paste and float a good hotcoat… PREP!!! clean up as much as you can before you paste and hotcoat… make sanding a easy job then and no sand thrus. http://surfnwsc.com

Just another word for basting… It depends on where you learned and who showed you… Just lay a thicker then norm basting over the lap cut… http://surfnwsc.com
lam. resin or sanding??
lam. resin or sanding?? Lam then sanding… You can never put sand on sand with out sanding first because of the wax… http://surfnwsc.com
Lam then sanding… You can never put sand on sand with out sanding first > because of the wax… I got a little confused on this post (not unusual) but in a nutshell I would say glass bottom…cut laps…lightly sand laps…do not baste (it will affect the color when you do the top)…glass top…cut laps…hot coat top and while your at it paint up under the bottom over the lap. When it cures flip the board and sand the laps down carefully (if you hit a little weave it will be ok just dont burn through}…scuff the shiny areas with scotchbrite…tape it off and hotcoat. It makes sanding a lot easier…hope I didn,t confuse things…R.B.

When you say glass top and cut laps are you still doing a full top glass lap over the rails?
