Been using Futures fin boxes and must say…I do like’em!
Pretty easy to instal, come up pretty neat, and I like the feel of a solid box through the tail of my board.
I’m still managing to get a couple of air bubbles under the glass, in around the the box and extra glass patch, nothing major, but…
was wondering if anyone had any little tips and tricks they used when installing Futures? Had a look in the archives, but the futures posts seemed to cover mainly the whole instal procedure.
I’m just looking for some hints and tips that will make the instal easier…smoother…prettier!!
Ooooo, nice technique there bb30. (Hmm, that’s what that stuff is used for!)
I gotta get my Futures boxes routered better. The FCS Fusion setup is so money and easy, they tool so well, I really have to bring my A game for Futures, especially with the concaves.
Saltbush, my technique is mix a separate bucket of resin for the footballs and let it thicken a bit in the pot. glass those footballs, flood the area and good to go. Greg Tate knives a line along the area that gets sanded off, says it relieves those air pockets. And it works on Fusions too; I like that method the best right now.
Once you laydown your glass patches ,make a small cut about an inch long on both sides along the top ridge of the box. When you put down your resin you can push the air bubbles out. Also, no need to worry about structure becuase this is an area that gets sanded through anyways.
Another tip is to make sure that when you set your boxes that you have ample resin to fill the box and cover the ILT pukas in the box. The old boxes were easier to set without having air bubbles but the new ILT boxes can create some air bubble fun if you go light on your paste when setting the boxes. Also, some guys like to add a little bit of aerosil to the mix to thicken the resin up so it doesn’t drain out, or soak into the foam, when they set their boxes. Love the Airtac 2 tip, very cool bb30. Relief cuts that WideAWAKE suggested is a great one too.
