just wondering , those who use bamboo [veneer, inlay , or for the tail patch or rail areas , etc] ...
Do you guys ever add a little tint , to get a slightly richer / different colour ?
if so , do you have any photos , please ?
[ I just laid up two little [ 5 " x 7"] 'bamboo inlay' fin panels , and was thinking along the lines of adding a little bit of yellow tint to the third panel , when I make it ....]
cheers !
ben
this is what the 'outside edge' of the previous two panels looks like , at the moment ...
Also .... thanks , Noe ! [ for the tip about " beware of water getting in " ! ]
So...
.....for [ 2 of ] these panels , I left the tabs 'unwooded' , for that very reason !
The edges will still need to be sealed with resin and or rovings or cloth , once foiled.
I think , looking at the joel tudor rainbow fins bamboo keel I posted before , that foiled bamboo, then set in a panel [a la the two agave small fins I did] may be the way to go... [it's just a bit more difficult to do , when dealing with veneer though , I guess ?! ]
It was a bit of a bummer , about the air bubbles . It seems that this "bamboo veneer" stuff needs to be really almost SOAKED in resin , prior to and during laminating !
oh , well... live and learn eh ? live , and LEARN ! :) [...What life is about , for me !]
You could even hold the bamboo up 2 or 3mm from the tabs then there is no edge of bamboo showing at all on the base, also concerning the edge around the perimeter of the fin you could foil them and then glass a layer over them like you would with glass ons to create a resin bead around them?lots more work but would make them impregnable! Looking good though…
yep , that's still "do-able" on the bases , at least , with the little bit extra I left , below the tabs ...
and because the bamboo is only three layers in from the inside edge of the panels , I'm hoping a light bead of resin all the way round "may" suffice , once the fins are foiled ...
cheers mate !

... alright , I better go cut up the remaining cloth offcuts , now ...
