To Jim Phillips: Daily Joy Plug

My leash plug on the Daily Joy cracked in half. I want to replace it. The old leash plug is a lot deeper than a new one (diameter is close enough). My question is, do you think I run the risk of doing any real damage to the stringer under the old plug? With it being so deep in know the thickness of the stringer under the plug must be thin. I plan to use a jig to make a hole saw cut around the pigmented resin of the plug, and then taking a pair of pliers to grab the cross bar, turning in a circular motion to pop out the old plug. Is there a better method? The board is no wall hanger (pretty beat up then restored) but is water tight with no delam and super fun to ride. I don’t want to do anything that will weaken the tail. I am worried about breaking out the stringer under the cup when I remove the old one. Thanks to all for any info.

Take your hole saw and cut through a piece of thin ply or paneling, tape this directly over the old plug. The ply keeps the hole saw from wobbling, this also works for centering a plug on the stringer. It could be one of the nylon plugs from Island Stlye, they had a concave profile, but were elastic enough to pop out of the hole, but not go back in.
