today -- kooks go home

yeah, surfed a good really local break this am – won’t say where cause i don’t want none of you longboards or midlengths or mat surfers coming to where me and my homies surf today was fun surf – like 4’ and clean. i was out for maybe two hours. i caught the sickest ride. practically got barrelled, well not really, but almost. man was i turning on that wave. well i made one sick turn and killed an arial…sorta…my board went flying! what do you think about these annoying old people on longboards? holy cow, dudes taking off way outside never letting me get anything. i gave them the stinkeye thinking they were all cool gliding by me on the inside. i hate those smug smiles. i don’t smile when i arial. no way worse yet are the almost as old dudes on the not longboards and not shortboards…they may be WORSE than the longboarders catching waves just as far out and going way faster, never walking the nose, never throwing spray when turning just turning from the middle of those annoying sorta little funny looking boards. whos the worst? what should be banned at all breaks? beach toys! saw one guy on a sleeping mat or something. guy never said a word. i don’t care how fast you go or how many waves you catch or how big a smile you have – if you aint at least standing up you are a kook. please all you people riding those annoying things leave us locals alone.

The Only People that i think should be banned are people with attitudes. WHo cares wht someone is surfing. You like shortboards. This other guy likes longboards. You like dogs, someone else likes birds. WHo cares. Why does it matter to you. Dont get al aggro just couse someone is catchin more waves then you(it happens). Everyone has their own opinion on a board they like. Long or shourt there all surfing. The waves are for everyone. If your that annoyed. go to a spot where only shortboards can handle. Then youll just have to deal with all the guys better then you catchin all the waves on there boards. Just say Peace. And surf… John C

Sounds like you need a little longer board so you too can catch waves early; Maybe a 7 foot performance big guy tri would get ya going and still keep you looking “non-kook-like”. By the way, I longboard exclusively & never give “looks” to short boarders who are inside of me.

I’ll admit I’m old, and I dropped my longboard on my glasses so I can’t see the little letters too well, but who’s this Sh*tbird person? Kind of a cool nickname. Glad to see that younger people are getting into the truw spirit of surfing again. Welcome to the longobard community, dude!

I think it’s obvious he’s just one of the posters, under an alias, trying to ruffle feathers. But come on now “…[longboards] the true spirit of surfing” give me a break. Before I start shaping I only rid shortboard, because that’s what I was handed down. Now I have a quiver from 6’0 to 10’ …I like em all. Still like my shorties a bit more, but had some epic sessions on my 7’10 – one particular day of 12 foot surf at ‘the Creek’. How can you say longboarding is the ‘true spirit’ of surfing? Because it came first? Do you drive a Model- T? …don’t think they would be allowed on the freeway. I’m not going to say shortboards are better, just different. Can’t do aerials on a longboard, can walk the nose on a shorty. Had a great longboard session this weekend at T-street in San Clemente. Tried my roommates 7-foot shorty (he’s a big guy), it sucked, why? The wave just wasn’t good for that little buoyancy. But try pulling your longboards on a average day at Newport Beach, you’ll get grinded. I dunno, guess I’m just weird, I just like to surf… be it on a 6’0 or 10, or anything in between.

Right on rook… the more boars the marrier. It would be lame riding the same thing over and over…its always nice to switch up Ahh yea John C

ride what works, not what gives you an image

And if it works well, you’ll get your image!

Awe guys, just kidding about longboards being the true spirit of surfing. True spirit of surfing doesn’t have anything to do with the equipment or the waves. But I’m just an old kook, so don’t take my word for it.

Everybody gets old!

imagine how pissed this guy would have been if nobody responded to his message.

Actually the people who need to be banned from the surf are the guys with the attitude. They usually don’t have the ability to appreciate a good ride when they see one…no matter what the craft. He might be surprised to find out that if he dropped the stinkeye he probably wouldn’t get the smug looks in response. I can gaurantee that if he grew up and changed his attitude and tried to be cool in the line up that he might have a better time and everyone around him would as well. Unless everyone already thinks he’s an asshole anyway. Surf what gives you the most pleasure from your surfing style and learn to share as well.

Sounds to me like this guy is just pulling some chains. I bet he is kicking back with a big smile on his face.

I’m with Rook on this one. Surf on whatevers apppropriate for the conditions. Doesn’t matter what craft you ride. Sunday surfed Moss Landing (dunes) It was lumpy due to heavy offshore winds. The shorebreak was the only thing holding any shape but it was grinding shorepound barrels. The shorty guys were trying but after watching most of them get pitched I decided to kneeboard it. Had a blast punching out the back of barrels just before they dumped on the beach.

Hey man, you shouldn’t kill ariels cause there aren’t very many left. Plus they’re kind of cute. And you shouldn’t surf when you’re sick.

There’s no way the poster is under 30! The prose is too articulate, and the digs at shortboard ampers too subtle. Can’t wait for his piece on women surfers!

“… please all you people riding those annoying things leave us locals alone.” You`re totally right! That post sounds suspiciously like a weird blend of Rich Harbour and Pink Floyd.

he he, he said ‘local’…

he said “local” and “please” in the same sentence. Obviously a phony.
