I have plans to build a HWS and I’ve searched all over Swaylocks and got tons of great information. The only thing I can’t seem to find though is anything about the way Tom Wegener is doing his boards. The only thing I know about T. Wegener is what I’ve seen in Sprout where it shows him gluing up some rails. If anyonw knows anything about how he builds his boards or any threads that explain this it would be much appriciated.
Hello Longboardswamis,
I have seen pictures of Wegener’s method, it is very similar to my own and it is very simple. . . it consists ( with apologies to Mr Wegener who knows more about his system than I do) of three panels. . . a deck and a bottom panel with a tapered internal panel which has flat cross members between a tapered, wide flat rail band which has fore and aft grain or grain following the rail. The whol three layer sandwich is laminated together onto a rocker table like a bent sandwhich or bent plywood.
I can draw it if you like, and some different variations of the sytem for different boardbuilding applications
Roy
Thanks Tom.
I can sort of get what your saying but a sketch might help.
Send him an email, he’s a nice guy.
I particullarly like his solid wood boards from palunia wood (which he oils instead of glasses.)

Quote:What about Tom, he’s original too yeah? Are his boards chambered or built on a frame?
From what I have seen (I have seen pictures of Tom’s boards being laminated) he laminates them on a frame, three layers. . . a deck and bottom of half inch to an inch thick Paulownia, and a middle layer which is tapered fore and aft.
This method is similar to my own, I can draw it if you like, it looks to be an excellent method for low rockered traditional longboards, very fast and simple with a good result, also the method is able to be adapted very easily into more complex thinner decked more heavily rockered boards by using another layer.
As far as I know this is the method used by Pat Curren who makes balsa guns (which sell for $US10k to 12k)
Hello Roy is it possible the same sketch is for Pat Curren’s method? I saw that when I log’d into today . . . Thanks for getting that out to us!
Bro. , I am not too comfortable about spilling Tom’s beans for him, besides, I only have a general idea of how his system works, so I don’t want to say any more on a thread with his name on it, perhaps better that he speaks for himself.
I will talk about the three layer timber sandwich system, and the four and five layer sandwich sytems which we use on another thread though.
Cheers,
Roy
Yeah I can understand that. I think I will just send him an email that way he can tell me as much or as little as he wants.
Thanks
Yeah, I can respect that . . . thanks ahead of time for showing the 3 layer timber, or the 4-5 layer . . .
