Given shaping is a highly physical endeavor, and that people age – how old can a fellow be and still produce a significant amount of boards. I’m 42 and would like to be in the game for many years to come. Also, are there common health problems that shapers develop – I would think overuse injuries would be common among the more prolific shapers. Shine http://users.leading.net/~shine

As you get older your experience will overpower what ever physical limitations that may arise. I don’t think I have to name names as to who is still shaping more than ever well into there 60’s, almost 70. A good environment and a few jazz records will help.

In our present youth-oriented culture, long before the time anyone with a lifetime of highly developed knowledge and skills has the most to offer, these same individuals are all too frequently passed off as being somehow less than relevant. When this happens, we`re all the loosers.
i figure it like this…the older you get the more you would want to shape. with as much knowledge a shaper retains as he/she shapes it would be a waste to quit shaping at a set age. now on the other hand, if the shaper is having problems shaping then they should go with what makes them happy and comfortable. thats the time to show a young shaper everything they know.
Hopefully,NEVER!!!..I plan on having my favorite templates creamated with me…who says you can’t take it with you!Herb.

…Either way …you’re gone!Herb. When your gone you should let your knowledge live on. Why be a selfish old man, share with the world what you have learned. Be known for being great not being a selfish old fart. Your boards cannot last forever, your ideas can. Klein

Before you accuse someone(me) of being “selfish”(hey Klien, that’s what i’m going to name my new “fish” in your honor ,of course),maybe you should archive my name and see what I have given(I believe I have given more information/ideas,etc. than anyone else here, or at least a good tie for first place!)…As far as my templates go, they’re just curved lines. They’re no big deal, just personnal.I don’t think anyone would want my old skivies after i’m gone either. hey herb, what brand are your chonies? The last time I saw Allen Seymore he was looking for famous skivvies. This year they sold Paul Stauch’s for $350.00. Last year it was Yater’s that got up in the frenzy. So, let’s get Herb’s while there a bargain. I’m with Spritzer on this one too. Pass the knowledge & burn the templets.

I ain’t ever gonna stop ----you gotta stop by some time and shoot the breeze
But they have served me well for over 25+ years.Herb.
Clay: Been looking to get by – I’ve been cracking up over the names of some of your new models – “mad mullet” – wish I’d thought of that one. See you in the fluidgroove. Shiner http://users2.fdn.com/~shine

I’ve never been a cigarette smoker, don’t abuse drugs or alcohol, am not overweight. I’ve always worn dust masks, so what will my demise be? heart attack, melenoma or arthritus takes it toll, making everyday life too painful. But as it is, the shaping room is my therapy, hard work doesn’t kill you, it’s the lack of it.

s wondering why they
re wasting their lives at jobs for which they have no real depth of passion… at one time or another, most of us will have to labor at various employments that we may not care a wit for, but that should never deter anyone from the quest for a vocation that satisfies like an avocation. We all stand to benefit one way or another whenever that sort of magic takes place. The more the better. Great words, Jim.
