Took a little vacation to Ecuador for 2.5mos. Made this 5’er while I was there.
Cool. I spent a month or so making a board in Ecuador along time ago, though mine didn't involve balsa. Where did you stay?
well dog my cats - that is really cool!
I made the board at Rasty and Julie’s Balsa Surf Camp in Montanita Ecuador. We lived in Montanita 30 yrs ago and the changes were just too sad for us to take. Their place is very nice and near “the punta” surf we lived around the point and WAY up the beach. Way different scene. Here is a picture of a 4’6" one I shaped for Rasty before I left. Yes it is a stand up board!!
Fascinating board - can you tell us anything about the design and performance? Years ago when I was in Hawaii the local kids were riding Morey Boogie boards about that size, stand-up surfing on them in pretty big waves.
Nice boards Ace. Are you still shaping in SD? I saw that OB Surf Shop is gone.

Ditto, on all points.
I am still in OB. The shop moved down the street. I am not sure if I am making the move with them. Kinda in a strange limbo land at the moment. Getting the itch to start shaping again. Hopefully something works out soon.
I have been making these little boards, out of foam, for awhile now. Feedback has been VERY POSITIVE. I spent the last few months riding a 7-6 [ small for me] all over Ecuador and was really happy with it in all kinds of conditions.
Yeah, I saw that big ol building with the OB Surf Shop sign but I didn't know if it was the same. I think everything but that bars on Newport Ave has changed in the last few years.
I hope you continue to shape as long as it holds your interest.

Shaping holds my interest now as much as it ever has. Working with some of the younger guys who are willing to break away from the “norm” has been really fun. It is just the “business” end of it that gets in the way sometimes. Hopefully this stuff will get resolved soon so I can get back to it. Plus I am looking forward to spending more time in Ecuador making Balsa boards on a custom basis.
right on ace. looks like your doing something no one else is. that’s a good start. C
That really is a sweet board. Wood is just special.
Yeah, I spent over a year in the Montanita area, and though it was only about twelve years ago for me, I can imagine how much it's changed. Actually, that's where I got my tag line from, now that I think about it. I hope your endeavors there go well.
