IMO it's not necessary to manually cut the tail outline. A good jigsaw works just fine. I cut right on the line and don't have to true up 99% of the time. I guess it depends on how many miles you've cut with a jigsaw, and the quality of your saw. (Some of them suck).
Microplane round surform to take down center, then tapered bands (it's a rail shape) blended to final.
I take out a lot of foam, thin tips give control at mach speeds.

In my opinion, the best are the Bosch barrel grip jigsaws. Variable speed, lots of flavors of blade available, very good control, better than the top-handle type. They seem to last forever, at least mine has, so you may find one used quite reasonable.
If you do your cut layout on the bottom, then it'll be far easier and your cut will be at 90 degrees to the bottom automatically.

For rounding the butt crack in fish or swallows I use cloth backed floor sanding paper. The black stuff they use on the big drum sanders. I scrounge scrap pieces from guys who do wood flooring. Just roll it into a tube shape. It works like a charm in fairing the transition at the base of glassed on fins, too. Another method is coarse sticky-back sandpaper stuck on a dowel. Use a dowel with a diameter that fits the curve you want. 1/4", 3/8", etc… Stick the sandpaper to the center part of the dowel, and the two ends are used as handles like a two-man saw. That way you can push/pull with both hands.

you didnt read the first post i did properly on the pulled fish tail thread when i posted a square tail board and said i would post a round tail version later on when i took a photo of it. you then used my photo without permission to make a point how dumb i am posting a square tail when talking about round tails.
