happy trails,

Larva,

Thank you.

For those who have not tried this type of plane, I highly recommend it.

After occasionally eyeing a fellow shaper’s for the past couple of years, I finally tried it out of simple curiosity last time I shaped in his bay (with permission, of course). It’s easy to get very fine stringer shavings on even extremely rockered boards (of which, fortunately, I shape very few) without damaging the foam.

Thank you for the link, I’ll be ordering my own as well.

Aloha Larva,

Try these: http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=5808

Woodcraft company also makes a “palm plane” catalog #129217 (a flat bottom blade) and thaey at least used to make a catalog #129216 which is a slighly curved blade. I have used each plane for years and highly recommend them. They are remakes of the old Stanley #100 and #1001/2 palm planes. They are made of bronze, finely finished, and a quality lifetime tool for woodworking.

nice find…thanks.

time to spend more money :]

well… I have one of those curved bottom wooden planes, and never really liked it much. For about $8 you can get one of these (made by Zona) and they work just as well for stringers, in my opinion; particularly in that area up by the nose on the deck…

I agree with you, Keith. And those by Shapers Australia are very fine in that the blade AND the shoe are curved:

Aloha Keith,

Agree, spokeshaves are great tools. The traditional models were wood handled and most serious woodworkers have a few. You can pull or push. Very sharp blades are the secret (they don’t come new “sharp”) Convex round bottoms or flat available from several companies including Stanley, Kunz, Clifton, Record, Lie Nielsen. Veritas also makes a new model with a low angle blade and adjustable from flat to concave or convex surfaces available from www.Leevalley.com (about $57)
