Toothpaste

anybody ever use toothpaste for the finishing touch of a gloss coat repair?

what do you do, just rub it on there with some fine sand paper? or a cloth?

This is one of those trade secrets that rank right up there with acrylic floor finish and diaper filler. Yeah, some toothpastes actually works pretty good as a polishing compound. “Ultrabrite” is one that is slightly abrasive and works fine. Just squeeze some on to your board, add a little water and buff away.

buff with what?

With your toothbrush. duhh! -Carl

Why not use polishing compound? with a rag?

Can polishing compound be used on my teeth?

“Whitening tooth polishes” work very well…

Howzit John, I have seen some tooth paste used for removing scratches from CD’s. Amazing what will work in a pinch.Aloha,Kokua

works well on teeth to.

What a great question! It takes me back to my beginnings. Using toothpaste was a whispered “secret” in 1958/59 when I was told about it. Almost any soft cloth will work well for buffing.

History Lesson #32-4.The old timers used pumice and rottenstone as a rubbing compound. They are fine powdered abrasives that you can mix with oils (linseed was one). The 19th century cabinet makers polished varnish and shellac finishes out using a wool felt block.I still have these products in my woodshop and it they work great. RB

Roger,

You are correct. For rubouts on boards we used water instead of oil. Worked just fine. Rottonstone really produced a great shine, but was a mess to use.

Autobody people frequently use cornstarch. As a poor kid we used it as a

cheap form of toothpaste as well. Patrick

Works great on chrome too

I was also told by a friend who had an acne problem that toothpaste works good as a clearasil replacement

Howzit Fred, sounds like tooth paste is right up there with Windex. I f you saw the movie " My big fat greek wedding" you’ll know what I mean.Aloha,Kokua

wow after reading this i will never look at toothpaste the same way again.

who knew it was such a multi tasker. and it will leave your board minty fresh with a pearly white sheen.

But sorry mate, it doesn’t fix cavities, or cavitation for that matter!

Just for the fun of it. Toothpaste, the miracle compound.
