I’ve made skimboards with the sugar in the resin trick, but you gotta use the real fine sugar otherwise you’ll cut yourself up big time.
I’ve also made em with the surface as a laminated sheet of fibreglass, the weave gives you enough grip.

The legendary Pete Peterson use to wax [or whatever they used for traction back then ] his feet so his board was immaculate. I discovered boogie board slippers this summer which are great for traction ,thin so you hardly know they are on and give a bit of warmth .

I’ve use many different types of front pads from old skool x trak front pads, xm surf and versa surf.
XM surf is junk and does not work at all, Versa surf is the best so far clear and goo traction no rashing but with a rash guard you will slip when paddeling, but wetsuits or bare back no problem.
I’m gonna try Gecko grip.
Hi Paul, just dug up this thread as I want to try something like this on a board, do you or anyone else interested know what material can be used to glass through before lifting off?
was thinking some sort of screen material or net, I might be able to save myself some strife if someone has had any success or knowledge of something that works good?
thanks…
hmmm definitely more cost-effective than waxing the entire deck; it could also fetch you a new nickname in the lineup. ‘waxfoot’

What's wrong with wax???? These alternatives seem silly to me. If I don't like my wax job I strip it off and put a new coat on. These "alternatives" are either permanent or semi-permanent. I like the KISS prinsipal......Keep it Simple.....
Ive seen a few cool sailboard decks and longboard nose areas with the sugar / resin treatment. Looked like they taped a pattern, applied the resin / sugar then removed the tape. The areas where the tape was were smooth. Lots of extra work but really nice effect. I may give it a shot just to try something new.
I recently saw somwhere about a clear spray on traction (Monster Paint Traction - I think) advertised for use on SUP / longboard noses - no idea how it works but it sounded good.
yoyo
I’ve used the spray on traction and it works well but it also tears everything up. Bare skin, rash guards and even the non-smoothie portions of a wetsuit. Now I use it as base coat - I spray on a thin coat and then cover that with a thin layer of wax. It really cuts down on the amount of wax I use and I never get bare spots, even when the deck dents.
I’m interested in the linen trick. I could see laminating a white piece of linen over a clear deck.
I used a plastic flourescent light fixture cover pushed into a thin coat of resin. Let the resin dry almost completely and pull it off. You now have a textured pattern on your board. I used Epoxy and it does not stick to the plastic. Not sure about poly so do a test. They have them at Lowes and Home Depot in a variety of patterns and sizes. I’ve only tried it on an SUP but I plan to try it on a longboard soon. Dependig on the pattern you get you may want to sand it down a bit if it ends up too abrasive.
