Traditional Log Shape and Specs for a Beginner

A friend at work wants a traditional log. It’ll only be my 16th board and I am a little nervous about the length to be truthful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited but, I don’t know for sure what combination of specs will produce a fun, pleasurable experience for him.

He’s 6’2" 250lbs from the midwest and has no interest other than enjoying himself in small surf during the summer.

My plan so far is something in the neighborhood of 9’8" to 10’ and 23" to 23 1/4" wide x 3" to 3 1/4" thick with soft, forgiving rails. I plan on using the 10-2B blank. I don’t have a template but, there is a nice looking one (9’10") here http://www.blendingcurves.com/temps/long/long_d

If something other than what I’ve noted here will help out I’m all ears.

Thanks in advance for the replies and be sure to make a build thread.

Nine six nose rider 22.5 23" + I think?? I’m new to nose ridin and long board n so I’m not sure what you should build? But make sure the nose is wide 17-19" -tail 16" + I think? 9’8" might be what I rode? My friend said nine six ! Good tail kick, and low rocker n the nose, wide point back?? Maybe sum nose ridin experts will answer?

10’, maybe 10’2". No experience, 250 lbs?..A mid 9’ board is too small for a guy that size.

Good luck

Maybe its just semantics, but to me a log implies a heavy, old longboard with almost no rocker, a huge fin, belly, and round rails - they weren’t that easy to ride. I don’t think he wants a log. Just a longboard with relaxed rocker.  I don’t think it needs to be complicated.

A standard Malibu longboard template, square tail, wide nose, nothing special on the bottom, a little V in the nose and out the tail, single fin or single with sidebites.  I think Sammy’s right, it should be at least ten foot, maybe 24" wide, 3 1/2" thick.

If Ace chimes in, pay attention - he builds a lot of bigger boards for bigger guys.

Thanks for the replies. Huck says what I’m thinking about keeping it super simple. Also, it sounds like 10’ is the way to go. After all, he said he wanted a “ten-footer!”

Midwest surfer will never know the difference. All is good
