My favorite boards have glassed on fins. Has anybody figured out how to travel with them (such as wedged between a cargo crate & an oversized Gucci suitcase in the cargo hold of a 747 experiencing heavy turbulence)? It would be great to solve this without giving up the weight & ease of a soft case for a hard shell…any ideas? -Gregg
G… I’ve used something like one of these. I wrapped some duct tape around the whole thing and didn’t have any problems. The usual padding with bubble wrap or cardboard taped to the board inside your board bag is good insurance. $19.95 is pretty steep for a hunk of foam - it may be worth a little dumpster diving. http://www.wetsand.com/store/product.asp?ProdID=55
K-Mart, Wall Mart, and pool suppliers have these things, I think called noodles, They’re made out of dense closed-cell foam. The large ones are about 6" diam x 6’ long cylinders. They sell them for about $1 each for kid pool toys. I would be splitting them in half, then grooving the halves. I’d fit them over the fins and tape them down. For the rest of the board, I’ve heard this used. Get large cardboard boxes and foam pipe insullation tubes (Home Depot). Cut cardboard to exactly fit top and bottom of your board, and tape it in place. Split open the foam tubing and surround the rails with it. Tape the foam in place and cover the whole thing with heavy material. Go surfing.

ha! no gucci bag here as I am incapable of traveling in such style…yeah, rail padding is crucial as they’re probably the first to get hit…thank the maker for foam pipe padding & bubble wrap!!
