Has anyone had (or heard of anyone having) trouble flying with their longboards? i am going on a trip from east coast to the west (LAX) and checked out the oversize luggage info for United airlines. apparently longboards are over the max length (less then 115 inches) for baggage. the max length is similar on a few other airlines. my boardbag is 10’6" but i dont think they will measure it. has anyone been turned down at baggage check in, and not been allowed to take their boards? sorry that this isn’t a design question, but swaylock’s is full of wisdom and a good place to ask this question.

I have taken 11’ boards over to Hawaii and back several times - in board bags and boxed up, not just in bags! It’s a bit of a hassle but I’ve never had United or Hawaiian refuse because of the length. More than likely they will have you sign a release so they won’t have to assume any liability for damages. Are you sure it might not be easier to order a new board from a West Coast manufacturer and have it waiting for you? Then, you would only have to contend with the “adventure of shipping” on the way back! Just a thought!
what’s the going cost to fly with a 9’+ longboard???
what’s the going cost to fly with a 9’+ longboard??? To Hawaii? I’m not sure that they actually have a set rate . . . I think the last time I took boards over with me it was about $100. This was two longboards well padded and stuffed into one box. However, when I went over with Suntours, they didn’t charge me for the boards at all! Hard to figure sometimes.

$75.00 each way
I’m a ticket agent for a major airline…our rate is $100 per board one way…what a rip…we are told to look in board bags and count boards…only the hard core brown nosers do…most agents charge a flat $100 if the bag looks reasonable…four board coffen bags are a bit much! Most of the time I don’t charge at all unless a supervisor is working next to me or the passenger is being an asshole. Travel light, be nice, and wait for the agent that is wearing sun glasses on the counter…
tuna, how much more would it cost to send it via your airline’s cargo dept. insured? man, for 200$ round trip, you’ve gotta love that board!>>> I’m a ticket agent for a major airline…our rate is $100 per board one > way…what a rip…we are told to look in board bags and count > boards…only the hard core brown nosers do…most agents charge a flat > $100 if the bag looks reasonable…four board coffen bags are a bit much! > Most of the time I don’t charge at all unless a supervisor is working next > to me or the passenger is being an asshole. Steve…I am an excaliforian living and working on the east coast…wouldn’t be much help to you…as for air freight…I know that rates are based on weight and size…surfboards would be rated by the hight, weight and length of the bag…air freight is not not cheap…bring money!
I flew SFO to Kauai roundtrip last year on Sun Trips. Signed a damage waiver and paid $25 flat fee each way. Took one board, but they said I could take more in one bag only. Each board bag is $25. I’m leaving for the Maldives soon on Singapore Air. Main restriciton is weight. Each checked bag can only weigh up to 70 pounds. You can put more than one board into the bag, it just has to weigh under 70 pounds. No extra charge, but you can only take two (2) checked bags. I didn’t ask what the fee would be, or if they would allow a third checked (surfboard) bag.
