I’m going to the north shore for a few days in early February and I’m trying to decide whether to rent a board or bring my own. While I would much rather surf my own board, but I sure could do without the hassle and expense of traveling with it once again.

Rent…There are plenty of surf shops and I am quite sure you can find something similar to what you are used to. On the other hand, the surf could be big and you might need an appropriate board, which would also be available.
There are hoards of surfers here right now…hanging out after triple crown and on Christmas holidays. February should be less busy.

think about using Craigslist, huge selection so easy to find a way reasonable priced board or two that looks right for what you’ll be riding, make the deal over the phone, have the seller meet somewhere convenient…when the trip is over, take it into a surf shop, get probably half of what you paid for it back…last trip I liked one of the two boards I had bought so much I brought it home, gave the other (well used but still solid) away to someone who could really use it…why not if you can afford to?
That's right. Give one away to a brudda if you can. I once let a local guy back in the early 80's borrow my Rusty semi-gun for like three hours at Makaha. I couldn't afford to give that board away, but the brudda appreciated the loan. He ripped, and after the session he had a big smile on his face as he brought the board back up to the beach where I was loungin' with my poke and beer. I used to always take a couple of boogie boards with me to Cabo every year and give 'em away to the bus-boy or dishwasher at "Zippers". Lowel
ICC and Mcding best adice… Craigs List is probably a better option…and you can shop some before arrival.
