When it comes to performance, do you think the thruster has made all other board-fin designs irrelevant?
Depends on what an individual considers “performance” Drew
Performance? The thruster DEFINES performance! It kicks everything else`s ass! Past, present and maybe the future!
I agree with Drew
not in my world
the parameters of the “THRUSTER” like every other design fixation in the world of contemporary design will be eclipsed and the thruster will too become the "hairpin ,locomotive or twenty three skidoo of memory and the staunch adhearents will still be stiffing el Simon Anderson for his measley $1.00 royalty check… or perhaps Paul Mc Kinney may he rest in peace…ambrose…glen kalakukui said paul was the 1st to put three fins on a surf board
funny I did not see one thruster out in 2 ft. perfect Malibu this AM!! Roger
Funny oxymoron: 2 ft. perfect Mailibu You must be that longboarder belly rider? What kind of “performance” were you out there defining? We couldn`t see any.
1,2,3,4,5, once I bought a board to life, 6,7,8,9,10, then I tried them all again, 10,9,8,7,6, lots of fins I could not mix, 5,4,3,2,1, know it all, you come undone.
Someone once said - to honor a sport, you must pay tribute to its past. I’m paying tribute with every board I make - staying close to the soul. Performance has many different meanings - as Drew said
Has anybody looked into shockwaves, ie the spray that flys out the side of the board at roughly 80-90 degrees, in fact theres shockwaves comming of all the leading edges and surfaces in contemporary surfcraft… could this be equated to wasted energy? You have to get the Bow Pressure Wave to stick to the board not fly off at 80-90 degrees… Hey simple experiment, go to a table cloth place your hand palm down and gently move your hand forward on the table cloth but not to much force so it doesnt stick and grab to your hand…notice the bunching up before your finger tips? theres a similar thing happening at the point of contact between the water surface and surfboards primary leading contact surfaces(Bow Pressure Wave) The more of this BPW bunching up before the board the more resistance the board endures, the surfboard is pushing water rather than displacing it…all very subtle things sure but in a fluid sky are very apparrent. http://www.geocities.com/wunderboyi/ninetysixpercent.html
False, thrusters work well but are not the end all be all of performance or speed. Case in point, my double wing pin twin turns circles around my thruster, it looser, turns easier, and accelerates faster. That being said, the board can not accomadate all conditions while maxing performance and sometimes a thruster is better suited. On the other hand dredging barrels and single fin is the peak of performance tube riding, Just ask Banks and Lopez. Thrusters are for close minded soles that want to set the line as everyone else, that all good if that is what you are into. But to truly push your limits you have to vary your equipment in accordance to wave size and quality. I put out a # of pros on both a 2+1 5’10" egg and my trusty twinny to the shock and dismay of both the other “pros”(of which I am not) and contest organizers who bitched about my choice of equipment to my face and from what I heard alot more bitching went on behind my back, Whatever to all the close minded tools!! I think the picture says it all 5’8" wing pin twinny on it and in control http://www.surfli.com/images/ea1jpg.JPG
Purefunance is all I am intersested in… A.S. stay off the shoulder and outta my way!! Roger
I have discovered one true fact about thrusters…Its three times as hard to to put fins on em.
As fas as I know no other flow form except “Spitster Boatails”(application in Mig and fastest bullet)wrapps the Bow Pressure Wave on to it self. These flow forms would not be able to achive their performance without utilising this priciple. http://www.geocities.com/wunderboyi/ninetysixpercent.html
Your chubby inland shaper surfs logs too. Almost as good as you can belly ride them. El Paipo Gordo.
T.E. - You got it wrong there man. I hunt and I KNOW that those bullets that you are trying to spell are called “Spitzers” (funny how your favorite design’s biggest fan, Herb, has the same last name…) As for “Spitzer boatail’s” I don’t think that I’ve heard them referred to with those terms simultaneously. Perhaps Herb might make a new design to honour this term though. Something with a pointy nose, fat straight-edged body, and nice pulled in squared up tail…Maybe terms are different in the US and i’m just talking nonsense. Canada here, Over and Out… Regards, Red P.s. TE, I’m not hacking you or the FP here. Just found it funny how your post mentioned spitzers. Unless of course the spelling mistake was intentional.
that ASarlo character I’ve seen him before. Malibu?
Sarlo probably steals more waves from people at Malibu than anyone. But you know what to expect from him and he don’t talk shit. So we know you aint him! Roger (Come show me some poorformance in the AM…first light)
