I’m such an idiot. I was drilling in a screw and the drill slipped off the screw and my finger hit the head of the screw and ripped through a deep part of my finger. I went to the clinic and they just glued it up because it wouldn’'t stop bleeding even after three hours it was still gushing. The blood keeps trying to come out today but is stuck by the glue and so makes a blood blister and then pops and oozes more juice. A lesson learned I guess. I’ll put up a pic of the rack, it’s almost done.
By now you are past the critical time frame, irrigate the wound,( essental if there is a puncture wound to remove any obvious contamination,(scarf, etc)
In the end you might need to go to theatre and have a basic saline irrigation , Plus anti bioticics .
The dumber you are, the slower you are.
Go now.
Ouch, I feel for ya!
I was holding a screw with my left hand between thumb and forefinger, and the philips tip slipped out of the screwhead as I was putting on the pressure, the tip of the screwgun drove into my thumb right at the point where the thumbnail meets the skin.
I thought I was going to lose the nail, but it just grew back funny and 2 years later, I now have a damaged growth plate for the fingernail that causes the nail to grow in three pieces at all wacky angles (surgery is my only option to correct it)
I pray you didn’t damage that part,
Mike
I went already, I said that I went to the clinic. The dcotor cleaned it out, gave me a tetanus shot, and then glued it up.

Cool… just making it clear for all that will follow you.
Count me in on the stupid things we do with screw guns. Last April my screw gun slipped out of the screw and into my left index finger at the joint above the nail. I saw the bone! The tip of the gun not only tore the skin, but kept running for that split second after and tore the skin even more. Now here is the clincher. If that wasn’t bad enough I had broken that joint above the nail in High School 36 years before. I didn’t think that I would be able to bend that finger again, but all is well.
I do any work involving power tools when I first enter the shop. I have found that my mind and body get more and more tired the longer I am down there. I don’t even touch my router, table saw, or jointer if I have been working for more than a couple of hours. I’ll either do something safe like sanding or I’ll take a break.
I would probably put using a hand drill to drive skrews in the moderately safe category, so my rule wouldn’t have helped in your case. I think I would have been wearing leather gloves though. The might have helpded a little.
I hope you get better soon.
Use square drive screws!!!
Phillips are virtually obsolete…
Every “real” lumber yard has them, not sure about the chain, immitation yards…
my dad is a smart man,(a Dr.) but careless when it comes to playing it safe. I remember when i was young he was using a power drill and the drill slipped and went into his artery in his hand blood was squirting everywhere, his stepfather had to drive him to the hospitatl inhis brand new cadillac with leather seats, my mom who is a nurse accompanied him and she said that my stepgrandfather was freaking out the whole time about the blood getting on his seats!
Here is the stand I made after I hurt my finger and the latest shape I’ve made. The stand only cost me $10 for wood and $3 for screws to make! Want it to be either a bonzer or single fin with some thick rails for a nice mellow board that catches waves easily. It’s 5’10" right now. Any advice would be appreciated, esp w/the concave. Thanks!
Nice rack ,nice finger. Hope all has healed. Get rid of the blue towel or cover it with a white tee shirt. Other wise you will get blue stuff in your foam. Use masking tape instead of duct tape. Tedsurfer has a Bumblebee thread going…might get some good ideas there. I like the outline I just can’t ride boards that small !
Dimond tail?

Gotta agree. I have another suggestion. You could add 2x4 brace across the bottom of your stand and attach a piece of plywood to the bottom. That way when you are done shaping and glassing you can turn it over and have a bench top. I know I always need more bench tops.
Stingray, what is a Dimond tail? J/K
I can’t believe that I am telling another guy, Nice Rack! But I have to admit you’ve got one hell of a nice rack.
Get rid of the towels and use self sealing pipe insulation holds the boards real nice and doesn’t leave marks on the board.
Here is a pic of my rack with the pipe insulation.
I went to Home Depot to get some nice thick foam but they didn’t have any. How does Home Depot not have any foam padding? I was thiniking of using the pipe insulation because I used that same kind for my board rack in my room as padding, but it seems too slippery and the blank would slide around a lot, but if you say so I’ll try it out. Does anyone else know where to get foam padding? Maybe a fabric store?
if the blank slides around on you, glue down a few cuttings of yoga mat on top…good grip
if that self sealing pipe insulation is the tstuff that looks and feels kinda like neoprene,(soft rubbery and smooth) make sure you seal the edges of and make sure it never tears, you will get black dust in the foam, and truste me it does not like to come out.
Hey 007:
You are right, you can get this really great green foam at
Jo-Ann’s Fabric store. There are lots around here so you
shouldn’t have any trouble finding them. Also, the tan foam
works great in the “pillow” thickness for a nice screen pad
and you can cut it to fit the large 8 x 8 (I think that’s the size)
screens available at Lowes/Home Depot.
One other thing, I would recommend that you add a board or
two between the two uprights below the cross-piece for extra
strength. The screws will fail in the base just when you almost
have the blank finished if you aren’t careful!!! Make sure that
you level the racks also and weight the hell out of the base so
it won’t creep across the floor.
Good luck on the board, looks interesting, the wide tail should
be good to surf in our summer small stuff!!!
