tunnel fins

“what did you use for the frame? and how did you get it lined up?”

I sliced a panel out of a plastic bucket and stuck it on a piece of wood with side runners that approximated toe-in. The strings were to pull the apex down a little so the sides had more cant. The foam was just to add some thickness.

This was a replacement hoop for the carbon fin that blew out. I also made the apex a little wider (front to back)thinking I could trim it down later if it was too stiff. It is still “stock.”

That looks awesome!

“I think maybe I hate you…no…no…I’m sure of it…I definitely hate you.” LOL

I think I want to try a “small” version. How thick do you think the core needs to be? Like a small plastic paint bucket? Or a Slurpee cup? for example.

GREEK SHORTY, Mahalo,Larry

Alright surfding, Glad you had a good surf trip, but it’s ProBox surfding. Mahalo,Larry

OUCH! Big feau pas there! LOL

Next thing you know people are gonna get all riled up over box systems! LOL (I’m kidding of course)

Nah SD…tore the tendons in my elbow…I think I would have rather broken my leg! LOL

Good to have you back

PRO-BOX

Sorry larry!

There are so many systems these day I just mixed it all up.

I can’t wait to put the system in.

I checked out you website and see that you have a nice quiver of fins!

Tendons take a long time to heal.

Bummer!

You got it all wrong Todd.

First “mulato” is not a mule. The word for mule is “mula”.

You have a bad dictonary or you went to google translation. With google is it always risky, you never know what your writing nor translating. When I translate from Spanish to Portuguese and vise-versa it’s a joke.

“Mulato” is a Portuguese term that is not black nor white. It’s in between.

No racism here nor am I a racist. In fact I don’t like racists.

It’s a matter of culture and assuming History and facts.

The Americans do have a problem with that. You cannot say black man without beeing judged and hell falls down on you if you say negro.

Here in portugal we don’t have that problem so far, because we assume that we do not offend.

God made white men, red men, yellow men, black men. (no negative conotation please).

With the Portuguese maritime discovery we explored all the African coast and were the firt European to reach Japan and India.

Our King gave permission to settle and MARRY local women and blend in expanding cristianism.

I think the english were not allowed to marry locals and considered a crime. (NOTE: not 100% sure about the word crime)

White men with black women…“mulato”

I think you get the picture now. Far from a mule.

In Brasil you have millions of mulatos resulting in Portuguese (white race) with slaves (black race) in the begining.

It’s History and a fact. No one should clean up History or bleach facts. For the good or for the worst, every nation has glorious pages and shamefull black pages too.

I’ve seen this before and read about it.

In my opinion this a half way term. It’s a mix fin and tunnel. If’s it’s efficient, what makes it efficient? The tunnel or the fin?

Does it work without the fin? If not, then the merit goes to the fin.

You would now say it complements each other…could be. But I was looking for something not so conventional and so obvious.

nature v. engineering,

Interesting point of view. Birds, fish, planes, subs…Air, water…very wel thought. We learn to think like that at Uni.

But the 1 million dollar question is: what animal RIDES waves?

I don’t know any, maybe you guys from downunder have some sort of fish LOL

If you do, then that is what we should be looking at.

Just teasing

For many years fins are nothing more than skegs or fixed rudders to create drag and move in a straight line.

Even today some fins are just that.

Evolution has not been that efficient nor that fast.

Don’t hit me…that’s me thinking out loud.

Here are some examples

Ah! Sorry…I saw you mention portugese so I looked it up(because I don’t know portugese LOL) to see if it had a different meaning and “small mule” is what I got.

Not sure where I got it…might have been google…maybe wiki…can’t remember.

So It means the same thing here…not sure I would agree with your statement of

So it does sound a bit racist to me. calling a mixed race person a “creature created by man” (Maybe it’s just a “translation” thing.)

That would go right back to my other statement.

But that arguement is for another thread on another website altogether. LOL

Anyway…back to fins…did you check out the CRV fins that I mentioned? They are very similar to what you described earlier.

They are certainly interesting. I have a set and they can be fun under the right conditions.

Hey listen…don’t take me seriiously with all the “mulato” stuff…I kid around A LOT!

Mahalo

AH! Good point…however

You can “RIDE” a wave with no fins whatsoever. The moment you attach something that will actually be passing “through” the water you enter into a whole other realm of dynamics than something that just rides “on” the water.

Dolphins, for example, do actually “ride” waves all the time. Though in a much more efficient manner.

When we talk about humans riding waves…it is not completely accurate and I think people often get things confused.

When we surf…WE are not riding the wave…we are riding the BOARD and the board is riding the wave. Although the components are connected and influencing each other…they are completely seperate.

The fin of a surfboard is influenced and bound by all natural laws that pertain to water…just like fish.

I AM NOT saying that means all fins have to be like fish fins…we can play around with designs and shapes and all that…but fins are all ultimately bound by the medium(water) that they are passing through.

Similar laws apply to aircraft which is why, in general, wings have not changed much since man started making airplanes.

There are always exceptions…but in general… a wing is a wing, and a fin is a fin

Most all things that pass through the air have wings…and most all things that pass through the water have fins.

And the design doesn’t change much either way.

OK…I’m sure I’m gonna catch a sh!tstorm for that…so let the bashing begin

Hey listen…don’t take me seriiously with all the “mulato” stuff…I kid around A LOT!

Mahalo

Todd

No worries…I agree that the word “creature” was an unfortunate choice of word. It was the only word I could remmember of. I’m certain there must be another better way to have put it. It’s good you have given me some tolerance because I don’t speak english that much.

Anyw I was just trying to explain a stupid saying

And the design doesn’t change much either way.

For the first time I agree 100% with you or for the first time you agree with me eheheheheheheheheh.

Very true and well said.

Cool

That’s more what I had in mind.

Cool pics John!

I can imagine one of the reasons they are not more common in the aircraft world is because of their “footprint”

Man! That top plane must be a B!TCH to do maintenance on! LOL

Hi John: as you know I always use tunnel fins in my board. here there are some pictures of the real thing, not finished yet. you will observe some changes, this new fin is much slender. the surfboard is some sort of " concept board" for me because will be testing this square nose, deep concave in the bottom. I call this model “ this side up” for obvious reasons J

Wow MQZ! I LOVE that board!

I have an idea for something similar…but that board outdoes even the idea I have in my head!!!

OUTSTANDING!!!
