turbo rasta fish

hey i posted at surfmag bb, but here it is agian

5’7"

i layed the fins over a trash can.

JJR(lockbox) helped me position them so they worked.

they dont feel as fast as regulard keels but they pump much faster and turn tighter with less amount of looseness. I’ve got the board dialed and it drops in on steaper waves, and handles hollow waves 10x better then a regular keel board. You can hit the lip like a thruster but still do the beautiful drawn out cut backs like a twin. The tail doesnt feel any wider than my regulard short board under my feet, yet its twice as wide.

great stuff , floydy !!

what size were the keels ?

… great to see a fellow fin -layer upperer !!

cheers !

ben

[p.s. … can you brink back the ‘moon’ avatar again ?

I did very similar about 12 years ago. You might want to try a shorter base to speed the board up a bit…

Hey Moonie,

Nice work mate! That is some dedication and patience to make a fine personalised craft like that one.

Could I please ask the nose/tail, thickness and pin-to-pin dimensions on the Fish. I just roughed out a

5’7" Fish myself but have got it too wide.

Yours is exactly what I had in mind…

Thanks,

Mark.

hey moonie nice board

Nice one ! I hadn’t hought of curved keels at all. I have a fish ready for hotcoat which I planned for the type of surfing you describe. I might have a go at curved keels. If youre willing to share could you tell us what toe and cant did you use ? and what is the diameter at the point of the bin which you used ?

A trashcan? Nice, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. I was wanting to make a set of curved fins out of glass and was trying to think how to copy to curve on the set I want to copy. I’ll have to take them with me and go trash-can shopping

BTW, I’m digging your beach cruiser too with the basket and banana seat.

Brilliant!!! Just think how many old Trash Cans are just sitting around … Cheap, Effcient, and Pretty Much the coolest conversation piece ever.

i kept the rocker of the top part of the 6’2"C, i cut the exess off of the bottom.

gave a little bit of tail rocker and double 1/4" concaves from 8" infront of the fin and inside the fins.

i think it was a 48 gal trash can, experiment, i almost used the curve on the bottom of my skate board.

i used a 3/16" toe 1 1/2" from trailing edge to rail, and 7" from trailing edge to tail.

these can be played with, suddle adjustments with have huge effects.

here is some reading on the positioning of the fins.

Thanks Moonie

friggen good on the fins. I’m stoked to see uncommon use of the familiar tools, materials and techniques. It shows what an inventive mind can do.

Ditto the unusual placement of the fin loop, though I dunno why you did it that way. Is there some advantage, or is this just more “because-I-can” inventiveness?

And of course, nice looking glass job. I’m more and more thinking resin swirls after years of glassing “ordinary” color patterns.

more the latter, I guess i was goin for the idea of a hidden leash loop, the top is flush with the deck, and fits right in the butt crack, makes sense to me.

thanks for the good comments.

Smart thinking Moonie,

Why trash you foot or knee on a raised leash loop?

does that say “BRITE” on the trash can? classic…

Having seen many a trash can, I can say with confidence that that particular trash can is a “Brute” model. Its a very sturdy PVC trash can and comes with a nice locking lid in matching color.
