I recently removed the trailer fin on my mod fish so I could go play around in some mushy surf and was amazed at how much faster it rode. Obviously the side fins are further up than they should be for a twin, so it’s super loose, but it still rode well. I’ve read about the advent of the thruster and how much faster people could surf – is this only because you can climb onto steeper sections? I’ve also read that single fins are faster on bottom turns (never rode one… shaping my first this weekend!)… obviously board design on a single, twin, and thruster are not the same – but that aside, is the speed difference ‘solely’ based on fin drag… more fin, more drag? I can see how thrusters would have more drag while turning – since you have to turn from somewhere, at least one fin face is going to resist – where as a single offers a low drag pivot point. But what about in between turns … the difference between twin and thruster (on mushy surf) seemed huge. On another note: Hey Herb, how do I go about getting a set of those supercharges of yours… is the shop open for business? I’d like to give those a try. Though I searched the archives and couldn’t really find any theory on them, except for redirecting some additional flow past the fins. cheers,
…Actually,Tom Sterne down in Victoria,Texas(hope all is okay for him and his loved ones)has done a few,I’ve done a few. They work well!Check the photo archives esp.btwn the 6’-7’ range for pics of some. These particular chargers are built for twin size fins, and even though they are bigger in size than my standard tri jobs, there nowhere near as big as Rusty’s C-5 canards(used on tri/thruster set-ups,like Rusty needs to Supercharge his canards they’re so big).I’ll go get a post# for one of Tom’s boards,it’s a great example of a Superchargered twinnie. And yes, they’re still available thru me.Herb
Yeah, whats the lowdown on those superchargers?? are they like a C5 rusty setup? Or is it different?
…PHOTO ARCHIVE # 281,ENJOY!Herb
…Here we go again! Most people would think that by looking at it,but it worlds different. …You can archive lots here,The biggest thing that sets the Superchargers apart from the C-5 is the C-5 is a board design, which is built around the canards. My Superchargers can be added to ANY sidefinned board, and they flat out perform better than the C-5 ever could hope to.Herb
Herb recently installed superchargers on my 8.5 thruster longboard and it actually rode better. I have actually been a bit turned off by 5 fins but I tried them after a few years of hearing his mouth then found out he was right all along. Herb shaped a 6.8 supercharger rocketfish with flat rocker and down rails {the board’s really thick} and it really flys, when I dropped in on my first 8’faces at Cottons I almost fell off the tail! That happened to me when I tried out a Bonzer in 1975 just so fast…Remember I didn’t like the concept for years, now I can’t see me not having a Twin/Thruster w/o the superchargers and I know for a fact that Herbs Foils them by hand and they take alot of time to make and he’s been giving them away free…That’s my Brother for ya I reckon were blessed with other things than the all mighty dollar …like friends, life long friends that’s what its all about anyways isn’t it so I say to all our friends HELLO!& SEE YA AGAIN SOON excuse me but ah I believe I hear my train a comin…go fishing now!
all i did was post one request and i received a pair in the mail 2 days later. cool metal flake too, so you know they gotta be fast.
Naw, I’ve done my reasearch, been through the archives, I don’t need any more convincing - I’ll try a set. How do you go about selling these?
