I could us some advice. I plan on making myself a twin fin, or variation, for this summer. I really like the templates of the Kane Garden twinzers and the 80’s Mark Richards twin fins. Approximately where should I place the widepoint? 3" forward? Or more? What could I expect by pushing widepoint back to center? I’ve been skimming the arcives for the past few nights but the majority of info concerns retro/Lish type fishes or thruster swallow tail ‘fishes’. Thanks- Scott
Prcaveman, I just shaped a 6-8 twinzer, I haven’t got it glassed yet…I have made many fish shaped boards and have a old Lis 5-5 kneeboard. most of the fishes that I make have the wide point up 3" to 6".I have done them with wide point at center and they are just fine too.in fact the one’s with the wide point on center seem to perform better for getting vertical on the wave. I getting ready to shape 6-6 rocket fish type board that will have the wide point placed at 4" up from center.
You can put WP 6" ahead of center for a traditional, stiff feel or…you can put WP 3" behind center for small waves and super loose feel.
There are NO set parameters, you just choose location based on YOUR needs and how you want the board to surf.
WP back gives you a wider, curvier tail, better in small surf.
WP forwards gives you more drive, narrower tail, better in …surf. You can guess.
Thanks guys. I want a bit of drive and a bit of looseness so I guess i’ll keep the widepoint around center. I guess I got caught up in the ‘mystique’ of riding/shaping a twin fin, when it is obvious that basic design principles apply regardless of the # of fins you put on the bottom… -Scott
