Twinzer fin questions

Howdy, I was wondering about twinzer fin placement and size. How are the fins placed in relation to each other (toe, cant, spacing, etc.) and how big are the fins? Is the fin in back always bigger? Is this set up best used on boards with wide tails?. thanks folks, Scott.

He’ll probably respond to this…just keep checking. Him and I were discussing his “Supercharger” fins (basically twinzers) but he seems to be the resident authority in my never so humble opinion. JC

Herb, I already checked the archives and found some good info, but not all that I think I remember there being. Seems like there was more. I’m thinking of a set up more like your Bro’s 6’1" Q-4 fish. I guess I should have just asked how you set it up in the first place. The board i’m working on is a 6’3" twinny that I put the fins on way to far up (11"). It is a wide stubby little pig and it has NO drive. After thinking about it I decided to grind the fins of and start over with more fin area. Already put a third trail fin on with no results, so what have I got to loose! Thanks dude, Scott.

Scott, My bros. 6’-1" Q-4 fish fin sets are : main fins are 4-1/2" tall x 4-1/2" in base length.(there old dyno fish fins recycled) there set at 7-1/2"up from the tips to the trailing edge, and trailing edge is set 1-1/2" off the rails, pointed at just past the nose, they are tipped out 4 degrees…the forward fins are 3-1/4" tall x 3" base length(recycled thruster fins),they are set 1’back behind the leading edge of the main fins ,and there is a 1-1/4" space between them. The toe in is the same or parallel to the main fins, the tilt is 5 degrees…hope this helps.Herb.

THAT’S ," THEY ARE SET 1" BACK BEHIND THE LEADING EDGE OF THE MAIN FINS".

Thanks Herb, you are a BIG help! The fins on the board now are some old recycled mohogany fins that my younger Bro. gave me like 20 years back. They are 6 1/4" tall with a 6" base. What if I re- stick them at around 8" or so and use a 4" or so fin in front, set up like your bros Q4. Think that will work? Thanks tons, Scott

Thanks tons, Scott …Ya, 8-9" ,and depending on your height, and weight 4" thruster type,or even better 3-1/2",happy fishing,Herb.

…the forward fins are tilted forward to reduce the back rake…about 1"…if you do this(which I recommend)cut the base of the fins at a angle(just the front thruster types)to tip the fins forward…Herb.

Thanks Herb, I’m on it! Scott.

I saw a nice Ben Aipa design recently at California St. in Ventura, CA. It was mid range length - 8" (?) with a winged round tail. It had the carbon fiber “hook fins” forward and smaller conventional fins behind and inside the hooks. Sorry, I wasn’t able to take measurements. I’ve yet to figure out which is better - smaller fins in front and outside the main drive fins or the other way around. Pearson Arrow (Santa Cruz) seems to like the smaller fins forward and outside on his quad longboards. When the front fins are angled forward, does the front edge of the fins actually lean forward beyond 90 degrees? If so, does this ever cause problems catching kelp or eel grass? I’m trying to work out some details on a split tail longboard and at this point I’m so confused, I may end up with something like 10 fin plugs to explore the possibilities!
