Twisted commercial

Not design related, but… I was half asleep this morning and the tube was still going from last nite (sorry S.O.B., Yeah?!) anyway…out of the corner of my eye, I saw another one of these “surfer exploitation” commercials (for the Wall Street Journal, this time). All these business people…your typical “suits”, HOT businesswomen in all their finery…walking on Wall Street with all manner of NEW SURFBOARDS under their arms! (shorties, longboards)… Semi-conscious, it sort of piqued my attention…(hey, surfboards on Wall Street, right?!). anyhow, I figured the gist of the commercial was probably about “surfing the net” (I swear I’m gonna barf) for business or maybe about how these people wished they were “free”…or something to that effect…maybe next scene they’d all be on some tropic beach or something. All of a sudden, this chick hurls her pintail into the air (the set-up shot for the next scene). I figured it would be into the water…next cut, all these wall street suits are walking away from this CONTAINER/DUMPSTER LOADED WITH ALL THEIR BEAUTIFUL STICKS!!! It really unnerved me. (I KNOW it’s supposed to be symbolic, but)…Let ME know where that dumpster is, and THEY can all go back to work!

The visuals make a nice allegory for how the business world sees surfing…I’m surprised SIMA hasn’t brought pressure to have that commercial pulled. Years ago I was on a surf trip in Baja with some old and new friends. My oldest friend in the world was riding really well on a clear no-name board. The only distingushing mark on it was a 6 inch piece of duct tape on the deck. During an afternoon tequila break I asked him if he’d dinged the deck, and he lifted the tape to reveal a K-Mart sticker. Got the board for $10 at a garage sale becuase nobody wanted a board with “K-Mart” on it. Shape and glass jobs were first rate. Keep your eyes open and you will find all sorts of things.

I would be proud to be sponsered by K-Mart!

Have seen this. It shows a small coastal town, with a storm blowing in. Then it pans to the ocean to show some close outs, then blends into a shot of what looks like mavericks with guy taking off and a sail boat out of perspective sitting behind him. Why not just show the real footage? It is a great wave and ride. Why does everything have to be dumed down and overdramatized for the masses?

A good, more ‘real’ , one is the 4x4 commercial that has two guys getting up from sleeping in their car on what looks like a Baja point. They wake up to some beautiful waves. Parting shot is a side (channel) perspective of someone taking off on a nice, head-high, right. …maybe they only show this one on the EC?>>> Have seen this. Picture the Nissan Xterra Ads- Ultimate SUV, mongo racks and all around macho vehicle. You see the guy strapping all of his heavy duty toys on the robust roof racks, kayaks, bikes and boards. Only happens in the movies. A friend strapped two boards (read the 2 I made him, 6’8" Hybrid Fish/7’2 Big Fish) on top of his wife’s new Xterra and hit the road Thanksgiving weekend for several days of surf. Halfway down the road the Xterra crossbar gives way and the PLASTIC coupler to the side bars gives way, second one goes with the added stress and both boards catapult off the top in the fast lane. Lots of ding repair even with the board bags. TS>>> Have seen this. now we know what lenny kravitz meant in the X-Terra commercial song: i wanna get away, i wanna FLY away…yeah, yeah, yeah

It’s real simple…Everybody wants to be a surfer. aloha P.S. Just because you surf doesn’t make you a surfer. I still shape a lot but I have a mega buck career doing something else…but I’m still a surfer.

Lenny left out the closing line- crying time again, big time. Poor Dave was in route to some good surf, at least it could have happend on the return. Check this out…I did a SunCure repair in the room that afternoon on the easiest fix. A 12" zipper rail with a matching cloth/resin lam patch. Curtains drawn during to laminate the cloth, then voila! open the curtains for the UV exposure. I had the air cleared and mess put away before the wife got back to the room. Love that UV Cure!>>> now we know what lenny kravitz meant in the X-Terra commercial song: i > wanna get away, i wanna FLY away…yeah, yeah, yeah
