I know this subject has been discussed before, but there are many more new shapers here then years ago.
I have found that I love my traditional fish going frontside but I perfer a no nose thruster going backside. So I took a fish, and thruster and combined the two outlines in photoshop. Has anyone really shaped something like this lately?
I have long been tempted by assymetrical shapes, but I lean more toward roundtails/round pins. Nemmine.
I think that your combination is interesting to consider, BUT the resulting board won’t behave like “one or the other” going left or right. It’ll behave like the one board it is, and to me this means you won’t see “fish” one way and "no-nose) the other way.
If the rockers are much different you may have to cope with some weird effects going straight, such as the board may want to pull to one side like a bent bicycle.
Still, I’m tempted by assymetrical boards, but not quite enough to commit a blank, resin, glass, and the labor hours to make one.
I still want to know, how different are the rocker, thickness, foil (rails) and bottom contours in the 2 boards your pulling the left and right template from?
note the left half of the board still comes into play when going right, and vice-versa. So even if the rocker and contours are the same between the 2 boards there is still the interaction of the 2 different template/profile halfs that will make the highbrid different than the sum of the 2 good parts.
That said try it and report back the results. Good learning opt for everyone.
how do the rockers and bottom contors compare between the 2 boards?

... jet bottom asymmetrical 'chip'
My favorite fish (and I have quite a few), is a reshape where I took a traditional fish with the straight rails, pulled in the tail and the nose, it looks strange but for smaller surf works unbelievable frontside and backside. I had two problems with the old shape, first and foremost the frontside turn I couldn’t get a tight enough arc with the wide tail. If I was riding a wave going backside (I’m regular so a left) and I pulled a hard cutback under the lip upon reentry I’d always bury the rail. I got rid of the extra foam and love the board. Asymmetricle boards scare me I’d be afraid I would show up at the beach with it and Roy would be standing there with the same board.
Used to ride asym snowboard but it had same bottom throughout and was really only the tail that was diff side to side. It worked pretty well but did have more tendency to wash out on turns on the “shorter” side.
LeeDD, that’s a great idea! Just vary the easily adjustable fins to provide the desired forehand vs backhand characteristics, rather than making an asymmetrical board.
…photo archive #200 under 6footers…got a better/UP-DATED one than that too!
,I call them a “Prediator series”
, Also, have that same temple/flow,set-up with the only thing different is a few inches added to the nose ,this narrowing the tip a bit,I call this series,
