Ultra-Newbie Video.....

Would any of the “Newbies” here be interested in a complete “How-To” video from a newbie’s perspective? Me and my buddy (we’ve both been surfing for over 20 years) are shaping a couple Fishes and are documenting everything from start to finish. I’m talking SUPER newbs…From what tools we used, to the mistakes we made/make, to the final product and the maiden surf…Let me know. I’ll be making DVD’s and sending them to whoever is interested for $25 (Shipping included in the lower 48) when it’s done. This will be meant for the person who WANTS to shape a board(s) but is hesitant due to experience and/or resources…If there’s a need for it, GREAT!, if not, it will be a great project for us…It will cover everything from buying a blank to shaping , glassing, and riding your board and will probably be available in early June…I look forward to any reponses…

How long will this newbie video be. I am not a new shaper i just need some tips on glassing and will this show how to galss and all the teqniques.

I think the video will be at LEAST 90 minutes if not more. This will be for the complete newbie (Like myself) that wants to everything on his/her own, but needs a little input and/or visual “stimulation”. It will be something I wish I could’ve bought when I was getting interested. Nothing that a seasoned veteran would be interested in, that’s for sure. From start to finish…

Shaping 101 and Glassing 101 are very newbie friendly. If you could turn your movie into Quicktime or .Mpeg format and host it on an internet site, it would probably be more popular than trying to sell it in DVD format.

Yeah, I’d like to do that, but it would be MASSIVE and take a looong to view with dial-up or a slow connection. I think I had too many beers when I worte that anyway. What was I thinking trying to sell DVD’s…??? I’ll try to edit it down and post it on my website if I can get it small enough.

Will this video shwo how to glass liek glassign 101 or is just going ot do a quick summary of it. If it shwo s hwo to glass i will buy it

Hey I’m the Buddy, and I’m sure trying to sell the dvd made no sense, but the video we plan on making, will be a documented process of our entire process from blank to bank(referring to off the lip that is)…

We wanted to show, what the message boards couldn’t, and make a documentary of our work in progress as it evolves.

Also showing that just about everything we’re doing is from what we’ve read and asked here @ Swaylocks…

So if the final result is too large to host here, or on our website’s then I think if those interested wanted a copy we’d send a dvd for cost(blank dvd) and shipping and handling…

I can’t praise this website enough for the information and skill’s shared, and I know a lot of us have a hard time transferring thoughts into text, and I think I’m safe to say that any and all visuals, especially those in a format that can be viewed and reviewed would and could be a valuable tool to refer to when and during the birth and delivery of a newly shaped surfboard would be an invaluable tool.

And yes we both know that shaping and glassing 101 have been out for awhile but that was done by professionalls and we obviously are not…

Hopefully in the end, the result would be an informative DVD that would document the average Joe picking up a blank, shaping, glassing, and riding the final product with a do’s and don’ts along the way and also what happens when the unexpected happens.

This is our first attempt to shaping and glassing our own boards, and although we’ve been surfing the same amount of time, Tenover has excelled in riding Longboards and I have kept with the shortboard mentality (but have finally seen the light and have been riding Longboards as a second board for about 8 years now) so I think conflicts will definately arise.

So tell us your thoughts wether it’s your first board or your third decade of shapes, what would you like to see in a video?

                                                                        Johnny.................

I think, if possible… it would be good to see where shaping/glassing 101 left off. I havent seen Master shaper/glasser, but I felt the 101s could have gone more in-depth in certain areas (but it was still a great informative source) For example, theory/process of including bottom contours, Removable fin systems (101 used glass ons…) and maybe even epoxy/volan jobs? Maybe its just time to invest in Master shaper/glasser… good luck, i will def. be purchasing , to support at the least.

Yeah, I think the video we make will end up being just for our own good/fun. Like sohaole said, we could send it to someone for the price of shipping & handling if they really want it, but I have a feeling it will be more for fun than anything else. I have to say though, that I would pay just as much for a DVD of some unknown first time shaper/glasser doing his thing and making mistakes and all, than I would for any of the current offerings…When you’re watching a Pro, you KNOW he’s a pro and you’ll never get it down quite like he does. When you’re watching a first-timer, it gives you something to go by and try to top. At least that’s MY feelings toward it. Thanks for the support Fluffy.

Hey,

I would be down to get this video. I haven’t seen the master shaper/glasser series yet, but the 101 was awful. If I wanted a general overview of how a surfboard was made, great, but to try and make one yourself after watching that is a diaster waiting to happen.

I think he passes over a lot of issues with glassing, but the 101 video is certainly enough to get you started, worked for me. I think I did a better job glassing my first board than I did shaping it…

Hey Guys,

I’d buy this too. I’m repairing/restoring an old windsurfing board and need the help with fixing dings, painting, adding graphics, and glossing. There is absolutely great stuff here on Swaylocks BUT you have to search repeatly to find the nuggets- It would be great to have some videos. I’m an instructional designer by trade and have a lot of experience with creating digital video (Quicktime, iMovie, & iDVD). If you’d like some help let me know.

Sean, I agree with you JC videos are newbie friendly…but both cost around $60 (VHS) plus shipping. What tenover is offering includes all shaping, glassing, and surfing for a cheaper price and in DVD no VHS. I think it’s a great project with a fair price…

On the other hand your idea on making the video on Quicktime or mpeg format sounds great…but a 90 minutes video in those formats is extremely heavy and could take forever to download it…

Anyway this is just my opinion…

Good luck with your project guys!

Just an update if anyone is still interested, tommorrows the big day

G L A S S I N G

If anyones followed the glassing seminar held at Keith Melville’s pad last weekend,

then you’ll know that Tenovers board was glassed with the help of Resinhead (Beautiful tint job)

So tommorrow we’ll be glassing my board and finish putting the fins (which we made) on and hotcoating

Tenovers bottom deck.

Hopefully we’ll post some pics tommorrow night.

Anyway that’s the update…
