Under side of a 50/50?

Okay gents,

Next Project is a Porsche 917 inspired 9’6". I’d like to try my hand at 50/50 rails. Am confused though as how to shape the bottom of the 50/50. Band it? Dragon skin? Screen? I’d like 50/50 ending with just a bit of hardness at the tail. Any tips?

Cheers!!

…with the planer…always

a very notable difference between true 50/50 rails is that they extend much further underneath the board than a modern rail, even a modern rounded rail.

if you look at a modern surfboard, the front portion of the rail is soft, but it still has a clean line where it meets the bottom of the board. a true fiddy fiddy rail smoothly and more slowly transitions into the bottom of the board, letting it sit a little bit into the water.

and it makes for a great ride.

Okay, I’ll try using the planer on the bottom half of the rails. Maybe two bands to bring the transition closer to the stringer on the bottom for a true 50/50. Thanks for the input.
