Unique Surfing Decal Design...

Hello everyone,

I want your “surf community opinion” on a new surf decal design I recently created. It can go on vehicles, surfboards, skateboards, etc. I’m offering it for sale on my personal website (on 3rd page), and will soon offer it to many local surf & skate shops in Southern California. What do you think?: Cool, stupid, unique, good, bad, offensive, etc? By the way, I’m not peddling my surfboard site here, just want your opinion on the new decal. www.glyder.net

Thanks for any of your input,

GRANT

Howzit Glyderman, The truth, Not really that original or unique but nice work. I actually like your board lam better. Question about price list, we usually break the price list sizes down to 6" increments like 9’0" to 9’6", why 2" increments. With the price of materials going up so fast it’s hard to hold the line on prices. These days I’m quoting the price when the board is ordered. Acetone has gone up over 50% in the last 6 months and resin is right behind it. Aloha,Kokua

IT DOESN’T “READ” WELL. TRY A FONT W/O THE SERIFS. COLOR FADE IS OK. THE DROP SHADOW DOES’NT WORK WELL THAT FONT EITHER. I THINK THE WORST THING IS THE SHAPE. THE “G” & “R” ARE NOT VERY LEGIBLE.

Reminds me of the original O’Neill logo. And the religious play on words and symbolic stance is too much for me. I’m sure you’ll have sucess with it among those who appreciate that kind of thing.

Yes, indeed that decal and whole design is unique the only thing I would change is the font color.

Whoops! I feel stupid. I shoulda read a little more closely. As far as the intended decal: as a Christian it kinda embarrases me. It seems like many Christians try to make things to spiritual/more spiritual than they need or should be. But from a marketing standpoint there are many who would buy it. But probably not many who surf though. Instead of surf shops try the Christian bookstores and such.

Cool idea on selling the decal as an extra but…

I don’t think you really want my opinion out of respect for others here… as I am not christian… and don’t appreciate the word play…

I like the decal thoiugh, without the words…

have a good one…

Poor bloke hasn’t got any pecs, I agree with Aquafiend on the drop shadow, embossing would look good using a lighter font colour, it would still stand out against the background.

cheers

You’d have trouble giving them away.

Sorry.

You asked.

I’m honest.

If Jesus rode for O’neill. or would that be, If O’neill rode for Jesus? I guess some people will want something like that. I’d say go for it. Try a short run of them and give them away to see what the “real” general public thinks. Good luck.

Ben

nope, uncool, offensive, don’t like it at all. But, hey, that’s just me.

It’s hard to make the leap from The Passion of the Christ (indescribable suffering)to The Passion of the Crest (fun on a surfboard). It seems like you’re using someone else’s idea for a title, namely Mel Gibson’s, to use as your own. And I agree, it looks like the classic O’Neill logo.

You have some good ideas, try for something that nobody has done before. Doug

Yup, how about “Bodysurfing With Buddah”, “Noseriding to Nirvana”, “Kitesurfers - the Krishna Way”, “Hanging Ten With Mr. Smith”, and “Baptists Love To Pearl”…

its not a bad looking logo its just the originality factor is way down. and i reall ythink that its possible that you could effend a whole lot of people. it doesnt really bother me a lot but i am not a hardcore bible thumper. who knows they might enjoy it.

Thanks for all of your honest opinions so far. I in no way meant to offend anyone by this decal. The design is obviously a “play” on “The Passion Of The Christ” movie title. It’s not to be taken too seriously. It’s just a decal that some surfers (religious or not) may want to put on their car or surfboard. It’s not going to be a logo for a surfboard company. With all of those scantily clad, busty surf chick decals I’ve seen recently on cars, I figured my decal will in no way be so blatently offensive. This decal may fall flat on its face, but I had to put it out there just to see what would happen. Keep the honest opinions coming.

Thanks, Grant

Quote:

Its not going on my car… I’m not affended but I find that even good funny decals are a waste of space, I only put meaningful decals on cars, like because of a great memrobel session I had at a break I then get a Hibiscus that says ‘Wategoes’ on it,

or A shop that supplies me with all my stuff. or just a cool looking dolphin sticker.

Josh.

Offensive is too strong a word. In poor taste. The movie was pretty offensive(an adjective that is way overused). Tough to sit through. I like busty surf chick stuff in poor taste although my wife and daughters would never allow me to put them on my truck. So what’s your market for that sticker? Christians? Keep trying. You can do better. I know you can. Mike

Speaking as a guy who runs a surf shop -

There are people out there who will buy anything , put any sticker on their car, board or whatever… but this isn’t a really catchy item, ya know? I’d take some, say, on consignment ( no, that doesn’t mean I want any, even free) but I wouldn’t buy 'em. It’s kinda like the people who come by every year selling their t-shirt designs: if they ain’t really offensive or world-class dumb, I’ll take a few on consignment but actually paying for 'em? Naaah- I have lots of things I need to carry and that’s what I spend money on.

The religious angle or movie takeoff - well, that goes against it. Religion polarises people for or against and I don’t need that aggravation or something messing with my customer base, movie references make it passe’ right quickly and it gets remaindered before the movie comes out on video. Let alone any copyright or trademark or similar issues which would make me immediately steer clear of something like that.

My suggestion is that you look for something kinda old and cliched, in the public domain, a phrase that everybody knows, then do a takeoff from that. Put it another way, if ya have to explain where it comes from, you’ve missed your target.

Sorry about that - hope this was of some use

doc…

I dunno, it just reminded me of Roy somehow…
